Wid Matthews (Wid Curry Matthews) was born on October 20, 1896 in Raleigh, Illinois. He made his Major League debut on April 18, 1923 for the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1923, his rookie year, he hit .274 with 1 home run and 25 RBI. Matthews played for the Philadelphia Athletics and Washington Senators over the course of his 3 year career.
