Why in h-e-double-hockeysticks would Billy Donovan leave Florida?

by user Tylersalt

I mean, I guess there are 1 million reasons why, but the fact is that Billy Donovan is going to have a much easier time at
the University of Florida than he ever would at Kentucky. A lot of this has been said before, I suppose, but what are the
potential factors that go into a decision like this?

  • Strength of program: Florida obviously wins by a mile here. Yes, Kentucky is one of the so-called "glamor" jobs in college
hoops, much like 'Bama football, but the fact is that the strength of the program right now at Florida trumps all of that.
However, I suppose one should never underestimate the draw of a storied program's mystique (see Saban, Nick).
  • Recruiting: Again, looking at what Florida has done over the past few years, I would find it hard to believe that Donovan wouldn't
have an easier time recruiting to Gainesville than Lexington.
  • Location: Donovan's family is established in Florida, and didn't someone just say that he's invested quite a bit of money in his kid's
private school? Not sure Mrs. Donovan or the kids would be too happy about leaving. Plus, even though Gainesville is a bit of a hole
(I know quite a few people who go there through my girlfriend who's from the area), I sure would rather live there than in Kentucky.
  • Money: Clearly the raise that Kentucky is offering him is substantial. But the effect that it will have on the decision process won't be
completely known until Florida gives their counter-offer. I assume they will give one -- the question is can they afford to pay two big
time coaching salaries (to Donovan and football coach Urban Meyer)? If I'm a trustee or a donor for UF, I'm opening my pocketbook
to keep these guys. Two straight basketball championships bookending the first football championship since the mid-90's? I'd say it's
worth it. And besides, think about the kind of money these championship runs bring into the school.

All in all, I can't really see any good reason for why Donovan should leave the swamp for Kentucky. I guess his decision will remain to be seen,
but I think he'd be a fool to leave.

Recruiting isn't a valid reason. The last 5 years, look at the top college recruits. They have all been within 150 or so miles of Kentucky's campus. Oden/Lebron/Mayo/Eric Gordon/Mike Conley/Josh Roberts/Chris Lofton/Bill Walker/Brendan Wright/Thaddeus Young/DaQuan Cook on and on and on.

Yankees haven't won a championship in quite some time, about as much as Kentucky; but would this article ever be written about the Yankees? Or Notre Dame football?

'Bama is a valid comparison because of the "mystique" factor and the fantastic history of the programs in their respective sports. You'll also notice that most if not all of those guys (I'm not sure) didn't go to school at Kentucky, so I'm not really sure what your point is there about that.

The only real reason Donavon would leave is because of his ego. He will never be the Number coach at his school, much less the state. He will always be at best 4th in line (Bowden, Meyer, Riley then Donavon). Capping out in 4th place is a hard pill for an ego like Donavon's to take. Not that a big ego is bad, especially in coaching. But in this case it could work against him making the best personal decision for him and his family.

Like he'll ever be the number one coach at Kentucky either. He'll always be compared to Pitino and Smith and all the other great coaches there over the years.

Now there's a move I could get behind. The only place it really makes place for him to go from UF is to the pros.

Because he loses everone, Brewer, Horford, Noah. Why start all over again when you can step into Kentucky and have a better team for next year?

The commenter above talked about ego. What's more ego-stroking than building up "your" program from scratch and bringing it back to the promised land after losing a bunch of great players? Kentucky will never belong to Donovan like Florida already does. He is that basketball program. If he's an egomaniac, how much better can it get?

You people talk all you want about Kentucky but the fact of the matter is, it is THE premier job in all of college basketball. He is coming to UK and it's not about the money. It's about being the coach of the most storied program of all time. And if you think he will have a harder time recruiting in Lexington than Gainesville, you are either on crack or don't have a clue.He can win 10 titles at UF and would still be 2nd fiddle. He wins at UK and he's a rock star,a god.People will name their kids after him.

He he, Him & Petino = Pretty good pals. I would find it very dickish of him to move into a fellow pals "territory." Also I would honestly have to say UCLA, atleast would be a more prestine coaching job then Kentucky. But hell, it's only one persons opinion.

Yeah, I'd also have to go with UCLA as a more "glamour" job than Kentucky. Maybe Duke and UNC as well, and Kansas to a lesser extent.

I think that Florida can ultimately match UK for money, even with Meyer in the picture, and I agree with you on the location part.. he has a lot attaching him there. However, I completely disagree on the other two points. The strength of the program issue is moot now, as Florida's whole starting lineup will be leaving, so he's starting over either way. Then from a recruiting standpoint, the only draw Florida has now is Donovan himself. If he goes to Kentucky, his recruiting prowess will be compounded with the Kentucky name, and more kids than ever will be made available to him.

He's set his legacy at Florida, first back to back championships in 15 years, and the first team in history to repeat with the same five starters from the previous year. So, he realistically has two options. He could stay at Florida and work on a Coach K, Dean Smith, John Wooden type legacy, or he can try his luck in the NBA. The Heat job is gravy for him, he doesn't have to relocate his family, and with Riley hanging around as an advisor could learn from the master. He's certainly in a win/win situation, but one thing for sure is he's not going to Kentucky or any other school except maybe his alma mater if the job comes open.

Kentucky is not a comparison to Bama. When was Bama's last national championship? When was their last BCS game? Kentucky has been the premiere program in the SEC for all but the past 3 years, won a championship in 1998, 20 win seasons consistently. Bama football is long gone, Kentucky isn't.

I am a kentucky fan,and as much as I would like to see Donovan at Kentucky I will have to wait and see what he decides just like everyone else.I have no right to second guess Billy, this his decission and not one to be taken litely.Either way he has to do what is right for himself and his family, and I will respect whatever he decides.

Whether he comes to Kentucky or not is one thing but,all of the people out there that think Kentucky is a thing of the past are going to be eating your words one day soon.

Best Regards; One in Big Blue Nation.

ok heres the deal, Billy got his name @ Kentucky under Pitino. He will come back to KY. All the interviews he has had opportunities to end it by saying no, not happened. yeah, maybe keeping his stock up and making florida dig deep as a scare he might leave? But I know billys style and he knows he will be a god @ ky after 10-loss Tubbys destruction to the program, and before you say it, Tubby won the 98 champ with Pitinos team, he didnt recruit those guys. They would have won if the band director coached them. Good ridance Tubby, roll out the carpet for Billy D.
