Why Vince Young's Stock Continues to Plummet!!

by user The Franchise

The problem with Vince Young is that no other QB has played his game and been consistantly successful at the next level. Look at how Michael Vick turned out, there is talk that the Atlanta Falcons would consider trading the guy if anyone was stupid enough to take him on.

The biggest issue is that QB is not an "athletes" position, yes having athleticism is nice but reading a defense is first and foremost. Young had a great rose bowl, but honestly it was all with his feet. Yes he made some nice throws but most were because he bought himself time. That just doesnt cut it in the NFL these days, sure it works for the occasional broken play but so far it has proven that Pocket QB's win Championships.

Consider in the last few years the amount of QB's that have gotten seriously hurt when running.

Drew Bledsoe

Remember the hit that Drew took that led to Brady stepping in and taking over the Pats. Well that doesnt happen often, the Pats were lucky they had Brady.

Michael Vick

Preseason game, goes and cracks his leg while running and goes down for nearly the whole season.

Daunte Culpepper

3 Ligaments in one knee, all cause he was running.

Kurt Warner

Last season with the Cards when he pulled up lame it was on a play where he was trying to scramble.

Kyle Boller

Turf Toe happened when he scrambled and got taken down from behind. Result- out 8 weeks, cost the ravens their season and probably his last chance at being the unquestioned starter. Im sure there are more, these are just the ones I can remember.

Now anyone with half a brain could point out that Palmer's injury happened in the pocket, thats not the point. Injuries happen anywhere but QB's have been devasted lately when they run the ball. So take all of that into consideration, tons of scary memories for GM's all around the league. Then Young does absolutely abysmal on his Wonderlic while Leinart goes and gets a 38 and wonders why his stock is falling? The guy has talent, but if youre a GM are you willing to essentially mortgage your Franchise, life, career on the chance that Young is different than everybody else before him? Personally I dont touch Young, sure his upside is huge but consider how ugly it could get?

People want to point to the Rose Bowl as an example, can anyone remember the last time a QB rushed for 200 yards in a game? Never, and it probably never will happen. Speaking of the Rose Bowl Leinart was clearly the most Pro ready QB. He stood tall in the pocket, completed 73% of his passes and looked like an NFL QB. Young could have double his stats in the Rose Bowl and Leinart would still be the absolute unquestioned #1 QB. So how far will Young drop?? With a good Pro Day he can still be a top 10, but if it isnt great?

Top 12 Will Not Take Young in the Draft

#1 Pick

Lets assume Houston takes Bush

#2 Pick

Brees is in New Orleans so they dont take a QB.

#3 Pick

Matt Leinart to Titans, pretty simple so far.

#4 Pick

Now lets say the Jets at #4 are going to try and go with Chadrick Ramsington at QB,

#5 Pick

Green Bay- No way they take a QB, I would be shocked. You cant use a first rounder on a pivot two years in a row.

#6 Pick

San Francisco- See above.

#7 Pick

Oakland - I hear Culter is their man, but an outside chance for Young. But if Oakland doesnt take Young then where does he go??

#8 Pick

Buffalo- Nope.

#9 Pick

Detriot- Nope.

#10 Pick

Arizona - Higle unlikely.

#11 Pick

St.Louis- Nada.

#12 Pick

Cleveland- Doubt it.

So, Where Does that Leave Young?

Maybe the Ravens at 13, maybe Vikings at 17. Also Seattle has offered there #31 for John Abraham and if that goes through and Young was available at 31 I could see the Jets jumping on him. Now I am not saying this will happen, but look at Rodgers last year he fell like a stone, wouldnt surprise me if it happened again this year.

You make statements that are completely unsupported. Why would it be highly unlikely that Arizona takes Young? I think it is highly LIKELY that is Vince Young is there for AZ there is no way they pass. Denny Green was in love with Culpepper so why would he not like Young? Plus, of the QBs you mention, many of them are pocket passers and not running QBs. Bledsoe, Warner and Boller are all pocket passers as are other QBs injured like Chad Pennington. QBs get hurt. It happens. Typically it happens when they get hit. Joe Theisman got hit in the pocket as did Chad Pennington. Daunte Culpepper got hit scrambling. What does that prove? I don't understand your point nor do I think it makes much sense. Overall I'd say this is a pretty poor article with very little substance.

The problem with comparing Young to Vick is that there are very large differences in their styles and results. People like to compare them because they are both rushing QBs. However, Young is already a better passer than Vick ever was. He's bigger and more durable. And, unlike Vick, he does not sustain injuries because he runs out of bounds instead of staying in to take hits like Vick does. And I agree with MetsJets. It's not a given that the Jets wouldn't take him. You really think that the acquisition of the heretofor SUCKY Ramsy means they've got their man? Arizona doesn't have a good QB, neither does Buffalo. Detroit picked up Kitna and McCown. Big freaking deal. They're only good as backups. So all these teams you say would surely not pick up Vince are still in the running, when you consider that all the QBs they've acquired are not solid starters. He could still go to all the teams I just mentioned. And don't forget that the Saints will probably look to trade down, and you don't know who might take their spot.

To MetsJetsDevils (MJD) and Anonymous Fanatic- As you can see I said "Now lets say the Jets at #4 are going to try and go with Chadrick Ramsington at QB" So I did not conceed that they would take Young. I said "If" they do not take Young, which I dont think they will do, investing all that money into a maybe guy just doesnt make sense at #4, later in the draft (as I also mentioned) Young in my opinion is a more acceptable risk.

Yes MJD I know QB's get hurt, I was pointing out that a lot of long term injuries like all the ones I mentioned were when QB's scrambled, whether they were pocket QB's or not. My point was that very serious injuries and more long term injuries have happened when QB's have scrambled. At no point did I say that QB's dont get hurt in the pocket or that a QB can not be seriously injured in the pocket, I merely stated that the severity of the injury seems to increase when scrambling.

I dont think Arizona would draft a QB right now, they seem to have a team built to win now. If anything I would think they will pick up another vet QB and draft a guy in the 3rd round or up.

MJD:"Overall I'd say this is a pretty poor article with very little substance."

These are my opinions, if you do not like them I do not care!! Judging from the teams you cheer for and your grammar I would guess that you are a garbageman or a door to door vacuum salesman. In fact now that I know you cheer for the Jets I hope they take Young. When he has trouble with the playbook and admits he can not read, I hope you two sit beside each other in the Adult Literacy night class.

Yeah, that makes as much sense as your post. Jets, Mets and Devils fans are all garbage men. Indeed, all New Yorkers are. thats why so much of this nations DNP comes from New York. But at least you revealed your identity. look everyone, this article that thinks the Cardinals are built to win now with Kurt Warner as their QB was actually writen by John Rocker. Congrats John, and sorry your stint in the Independent League did not go well. Just because someone doesn't like your article doesn't mean you personally attack them. this website was started to have intellectual conversation about sports and not to resort to ad himonim attacks when people disagree with you. Oh wow, a Garbage Man/Door to Door vacuum cleaner salesmen just used the words ad hominim in his post. Shit!

Did you mean GDP?? Boy these attacks might bother me if they were from someone with above average intelligence. Hey everyone, most of the "Did Not Plays" are from New York.

I'm sorry, I just have to also say that VY winning the Rose Bowl wasn't just with his feet. He passed for over 200 yards, and his best scrambles come when he reads the defense and waits for his opening. If you think Vince can't read defenses, you haven't watched him play enough.

McNabb and Culpepper both came in as scramblers and developed into effective passers. Aren't VY's problems faulty mechanics and the customized shotgun offense he ran at Texas? The guy is a tremendous athletic talent that, in all likelihood, just isn't going to be ready to step in at the NFL level for at least a year. If that's the case, then it seems like a team with a decent placeholder but no long-term plan at QB would do pretty well to grab him. Arizona seems like a good fit.

And just as an aside regarding rhetoric, Franchise: Opinions are a lot more effective when they come with a little fact-based argument. Also, "Higle" isn't a word. At least not where I come from -which, sadly, happens to be a certain town on the Hudson that starts with an "N," ends in a "K" and has "ew Yor" in between.

Hey Buddy, isn't it a little hard to insult someone's intelligence when you don't know that GNP and GDP are two different but related ideas. So no, I did not mean GDP, I meant GNP. And yet again you can't respond with anything of substance but rather more personal attacks. Here's some info on GNP and GDP. And by the way, the article was still poorly thought out and licking in substance. GNP and GDP tend to be used as synonyms, although GDP is definitely the preferred measure among economists and is gaining popularity in general conversation as well; the two measures are fairly close numerically. The difference is that GDP measures all production within the U.S., by whoever happens to be working here; GNP measures the production of all Americans, wherever they happen to be working. (Maybe you can remember the "N" in GNP stands for "anywhere").
