When Will She Be In the Booth?

(I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this - don't hold back just because I'm a woman! Not that you will, but just thought I'd put that out there.)

Ok, not necessarily the "she" pictured here, but you get the idea.

I've been watching Monday Night Football (up tonight, Favre and the Green Bay Packers vs. the Denver Broncos. Nothing too exciting Update: Great ending!). As I watch Michelle Tafoya pop up periodically to give us the scoop from the sidelines, I think to myself, "Well that's good. But how come there's never a woman in the booth?"

While more women are getting opportunities (Tafoya, Suzy Kolber, Pam Oliver, Lisa Salters, or Bonnie Bernstein, to name a few, and Jemele Hill sort of counts, but she's not on TV as often as the others), no women are getting the big jobs of analyst or play-by-play. Gayle Sierens once did an NFL broadcast in a local market (or was it national?), but it must not have gone too well because they never asked her to do it again, and no woman has ever been in the booth for an NBA, NHL, or MLB game. Ok, so it turns out the MLB is a little bit more advanced, or at least its teams have been in their local markets. As Cecilio's Scribe pointed out to me, Suzyn Waldman (now infamous for crying following the Yankees loss in the playoffs), did a play-by-play stint on local TV for the Yankees in the mid-90's, and another woman, Gayle Gardner, was the first woman to do play-by-play -- with the now-World Series runner-ups, the Colorado Rockies.

So it's not only possible, but it has happened before. Yet today, you can't find a woman doing the play-by-play or the analyzing on TV in a professional men's sport.

I'm sure much of this has to do with the fact that women don't see other female sportscasters, and we certainly aren't encouraged to pursue the field. Heck, I wasn't even encouraged to do the blog, but seeing Jemele Hill do it gave me the extra "oomph" I needed to say that I could do it, too. Those women who have made it even onto the sidelines are putting in a whole lot of work to be where they are. The one thing about sports is that no matter how good you look, if you don't know what you're talking about, you are going to be the first one on the chopping block.

Not to mention that many of the sports fans, who are overwhelmingly male, have nothing better to do than compare which female sportscaster they'd rather sleep with, concocting entire "tournaments" devoted to the debate. I will not be linking to any of them on here, so you will just have to check that out for yourself.

Despite the women as sexual beings issue, I don't think men can't get used to hearing a woman do the analysis or the play-by-play for a major men's sport. We heard this all before when we entered the work place. This is nothing new. Someone (or some network) just has to let it happen once, be willing to take all the criticism, and then open the door for the rest. Like I said before about the NFL in London, change is always painful. But it's about time that the networks felt the pain of breaking that glass ceiling and put a woman in the broadcasting booth.

I rather enjoy Julie Foudy as a broadcaster, she is much better than the nevershutupcosIgotsumthinimportanttosayHeylissentome Eric Wynalda.

As far as announcers go, I wish they could get rid of all of them and use no announcers.

Actually they did try that in the 1980s. NBC broadcast a New York Jets game with no commentators, just the noise from Shea Stadium and more graphics, at least for that era. It was interesting and I did kind of like it.

I think I recall the NBA trying this, too. It makes it hard for the multi-taskers, though, and for those who may not know all the rules . . . AND for the know-it-alls who want to feel validated when they say "See? I said the exact same thing!"

The Pittsburgh Penguins have Treni Kysnerick (I have no idea how to spell her last name) on the post game show sometimes. She will be leaving fox sports soon to work for either the NFL network or the BIG TEN network soon.

As long as they don't get in the way of the game and have an annoying voice/attitiude then I don't care who/what is announcing. Great announcers say the least words but have the most to say. I had a weird dream the other night that Tim McCarver was replaced by Rachel Ray and my head disintegrated. I do have a lot of weird dreams, though.

I would LOVE to see women in the booth (hell, I'd love to BE a woman in the booth if I knew jack about broadcasting). As long as they're qualified and knowledgeable (and not just there to look "hot" or be "cute"), I think it would be great. However, you're damn right that I'd get sick of guys talking about whether they'd hit it and all that. We get more than enough of that now.

You can learn! Try it at the local level and make your way up. I don't know how old you are, but I think Waldman was 40 when she got her first play-by-play job.

In a press box a 2 becomes a 9 instantly. It's not exactly a feat being hot to the "studs" in a press box though.

my Problems and Issues are:

The chauvinism thing. We have only few venues that we dominate and you are taking those away from us!  ;)

The Sex thing, and not in the way that you think. I don't want to see the big breasted phone-sex-operator-voiced woman calling the games. I want a woman that is knowledgeable of the game and can keep me interested and involved in the action on the FIELD. A woman that will do the same job as a man and do it as good if not better. That's what I want, and unfortunately the cheerleader types are more popular / common. That makes me sad.

The format, we'll end up seeing the ex-joke side-by-side with the female play-by-play in 10 years. That is going to get boring quick. Variety, mix it up. A female basketball player is just as knowledgeable about the current NBA as an ex-nba star.

This will get resolved positively but it will take some time and there will always be a-hole males who only the cheerleader types to get the jobs. But you will see them more and more over the next 10 years, and buy the end of that time it will be as equal as we can get it.

Well, gender should play no part. If you are good then you are good no matter what. I do think, that a woman in the booth would sort of raise eyebrows for 5 minutes. When it comes to sports, I really like guys that know what its like though to tell me what it's like- former pros. I do not respect equally people, both genders, that did their homework but have never felt what the athlete feels. That's why you will not see women in the booth anytime soon, though I'd rather have a woman than Tony Kornheiser. You need that balance of a media-trained person that can speak, and a former athlete that can smile incessantly and then give you some feedback into what's happening on the field.

Yeah, I see what people are saying on the color-commentary to a certain extent (i.e., preference for ex-players and coaches) but Cheryl Miller can do an NBA game, of that I am confident. And a woman could certainly do Tony Kornheiser's job or Ernie Johnson's (woohoo, the NBA is back!) job, I don't see any issues with that whatsoever.

I don't care if it's a man or women doing play by play and cover as long as they are informed, knowledeable about the sport and can speak intellegently about the game in front of them. Most importantly a commentator should COMPLIMENT, not DISTRACT from the game!!!!
