This past weekend was great for the NFL and while it was fun to watch a senior citizen get another win as a quarterback, the biggest question from the last weekend is who the best team in the NFC is? The hierarchy in the AFC is easy to figure out, but the mediocrity in the NFC has created a log jam, and right now any number of teams could break through and make their way to Arizona for the Super Bowl. Despite all the confusion, here are the top five teams in the NFC, as of this week.
- Dallas Cowboys : The Cowboys are the best team in the NFC. Sunday’s game against New England proved the Cowboys are not the best team in the NFL. Luckily for them, they only need to worry about NFC teams. Tony Romo and the Cowboys offense appear to be back on track and for three quarters they were able to keep pace with the Patriots. The Cowboys continue to battle injuries, but have found ways to fill the voids. As the season progresses, they are one of the few teams that have the opportunity to get healthier as the season progresses. This will be a key to the Cowboys success as the season progresses. Dallas needs help in the secondary. Cornerbacks Anthony Henry and Terrence Newman are battling injuries. Brady and the Patriots exploited their weak defense on Sunday, and NFC teams will make the adjustments to do the thing. Health will be the key for Dallas as they advance through the season.
- New York Giants : The Giants may be the most surprising team on this list. After a horrible training camp and a 0-2 start, the Giants looked dead in the water. Currently the Giants are on a four game winning streak, and appear ready to go on a run. At a second glance the Giants are a very talented team. Eli Manning is in the midst of his best season as a pro. They are working with a stable of tailbacks and it is working for them. More importantly the Giants defense has transformed into a group of attack dogs. The front four embarrassed the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line two weeks ago, and they made Joey Harrington’s Monday Night Football début a disaster. Despite being a team with flaws, the Giants are hot, and they are playing with a purpose.
- Green Bay Packers : Brett Favre is the aging gunslinger, looking to go out on a high note, and right now he is on pace to do exactly that. The key to the Packers offense is Favre, not because he is a future Hall of Fame quarterback, but because Green Bay has no rushing offense. Ultimately that will be the undoing of the Packers. Opposing defenses will play their safeties extra deep, and drop back into coverage, because there is no reason to respect the run. The Green Bay defense is extraordinary. A veteran secondary matched with a young and athletic front seven is a great combination, and it is the reason the Packers are in the top five in the NFC.
- Washington Redskins : This is not your father’s Redskins team, and to be honest that may not be a good thing. Nonetheless, Washington is off to a 3-2 start on the season. Jason Campbell is maturing into a Pro-Bowl caliber quarterback. He has the ability to make plays both in the pocket and on the run. Greg Williams has his defensive unit performing at an elite level once again. This is very important because the Skins struggle to accomplish anything on offense. Washington is averaging 20.2 points a game, and that number drops to 16 points in their losses. Despite all of these, injuries will determine the Skins season. Half of their offensive line is hurt, and their top two receivers are battling injuries. Nothing can derail a promising season faster than the injury bug.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers : Jeff Garcia and Joey Galloway may be the oldest quarterback to wide-receiver duo in the history of the NFL, but that doesn’t matter as long as they continue to get the job done. Both of them are having standout years late in their career. In many ways it’s the perfect match for an aging Buccaneers team that appeared to lose a step over the past few seasons. The Bucs are far from a powerhouse, but they play scrappy enough to knock off most teams in the NFC.
