Video of the Day (27/09/06) - The Most Exciting Race Ever - And the Announcer Cocks It Up!

That was the 1969 Italian Grand Prix. The commentator is Murray Walker, a hugely famous British commentator, who had a history of bad mistakes. But we all loved him, nonetheless. (See Murray Walker Quotes.)

This was one of his least famous errors, but what a time to make it - the closest F1 finish ever until 1971, but still the second closest ever.

You have to listen closely...

  • Walker: It's Rindt going through! Jochen Rindt takes the lead on the last corner of the last lap!
  • (Brief pause)
  • Random Voice: Beltoise.
  • Walker: It's Beltoise going through!

I.e. Walker mistook Beltoise for Rindt, and messed up one of the greatest races ever. He did at least get them in the right order across the line.

The only video of this race in existence, therefore, has dodgy commentary!

Murray Walker always tended to get overexcited, and as a result tended to make huge blunders, as can be seen on his quotes page. Still a great man to listen to though, his retirement in 2001 was a sad day.

Nevertheless, enjoy the closing mile of the race, and a great finish. Forgive Murray... It's not his fault.

As an aside, would you call Murray Walker a commentator, or an announcer? I have heard the expression "play-by-play", but I'm not sure that applies in this context... There were no plays... But, if you could answer my question, I'd be grateful.

Per your aside, that's a tough question. I'd go with commentator. I would view an announcer as someone who comments sparingly on an event when need be, at a known time. Murray Walker appears to be giving a second-by-second analysis which lends it self to a play-by-play annoucer...which in my opinion is closer to a commentator than announcer.

Maybe it should be turn-by-turn.

I just liked the phrase, "And the announcer cocks it up". I think I'm going to start using it, e.g. "The article was good until Manny Stiles cocked it up." :)

that link to the Walker Murray quotes was much appreciated. I only read, like, the first 80; but there were some good ones in there.

Really, is that everything the guy ever said? That may be the first complete quote list. :-)
