Vick is Indicted

Many of you know what my opinion of Michael Vick is as a quarterback. I think he's the most overrated player of my generation, a runningback with a strong arm, a talent with untapped potential. Lately, his off-the-field reputation has taken a hit, with allegations of involvement in dog fighting. It was reported a few weeks ago that Vick would not be indicted on federal charges, but today he was.

Whoa.

This is something I hold very close to my heart, because I love animals, and everything that's transpired in this case so far has shaken me. From the disturbing profile of the dog-fighting world to the grisly details of the evidence on the property Vick owned, I wanted to believe it all wasn't true. Despite the fact I don't really like Vick as an athlete (I'm not a big fan of his attitude, either), I don't want anyone to be convicted for something they didn't commit. This is the first step, and Vick and his associates are far from being declared guilty.

What I am interested in seeing, as probably many of you are, will be the reaction of Roger Goodell. People have referenced the league's conduct policy focusing on punishing repeat offenders, and Vick is not a repeat offender, in their minds. Wasn't there an incident at an airport a few years ago? I forget the specifics, but there was some trouble. I love what the Commissioner has done to clean up the league's image, and now, when one of its biggest stars is put into question, his biggest chance to make a statement is right in front of him.

Then there's the on-field aspect. The Falcons are in a pickleickleickle, even if Vick is not suspended. This is not a Barry Bonds situation, where no charges have been filed and no formal process has been set in motion to prove he used performance-enhancing drugs. He will have some supporters, but I'm guessing the majority of them will not want someone in the midst of a trial leading their team. If they release him (a possibility, but a slim one, I think), they have to find another QB, and more importantly, another face for the franchise.

Finally, kudos to Kelly Naqi for breaking this story.

Really finally, if you have a dog, go give him or her a hug.

"Wasn't there an incident at an airport a few years ago?"

Vick was cleared of all wrong doing. There was a secret compartment in his water bottle that police thought was used for drug smuggling. Turns out its where he hid all his bling when traveling.

Oh how bad do the Falcons wish they had Matt Schuab back.

This is a devastating story for the NFL. They tried to make Vick the face of the league and while that didn't go over thanks to Vick's shotgun like acuracy, I think Vick is one of the most well known and liked players especially for those who can't relate to Manning and Brady.

Personally, I am glad charges were filed. Not because I want to see Vick go down. Not at all. I always root for Vick. But because if this was happening on his property, he is responsible. Now, maybe he knew and maybe he didn't, but you shouldn't be able to just avoid acting responsibly, by claiming you didn't know what was happening at your own place.

Unless those guys were trespassing which has never been suggested, Vick should have owned up to at least some of it.

The really crummy part though is I feel like this is like the Magic has HIV story, but worse. In the aftermath of that story, the whole world heard in detail about the groupie scene in the NBA and about how all the guys in the Association are basically male sluts with no sense of sexual morality or committment to their families. We all suspected it maybe and maybe I'm being too judgmental, but it was an ugly expose nonetheless.

The reports about the dog fighting make it seem like there is a huge underground culture that lots of athletes are involved with. Very, very disturbing. having a woman in every city may not suit my family values, but I can understand it on some level. raising dogs to be violent just to see them kill and be killed turns my stomach. To know that some of the guys my kids are already embracing might be involved in this is deeply disturbing. Every sports league needs to investigate this among their athletes and land hard on it now. Otherwise, we are going to watch these guys fall like the roid users only much much worse.

If Vick was an actual participant in all of this as opposed to just the owner of the house, he should get a lifetime ban.

I'm going to assume that LastRow is joking... or at least I hope so. But yeah, the Ray Lewis situation was just embarrassing for the NFL.

Yeah, but Ray's ordeal was under the old system. I think the League set a precedent with Pacman and Tank and such. I agree with your earlier comment that 4 games has to be the minimum. If the criminal complaint gets public and it comes out that Vick is alleged to have some more sigificant involvement than just an unknowing host, I think he could be done for the season.

I was thinking that...but is there no such thing as precedence in the NFL? Old or not, I have a problem with this change in standards sparked on by, namely, a guy who dumped money in a club...

What on earth? Is that what the nuns tell you when hairy palms and blindness aren't enough? That may be the worst thing I have seen in print in the last 6 months and I'm a lawyer so believe me when I say I see some bad things in print.

I was just thinking that...any chance Marcus was involved in any of this? Maybe when he stepped on that player (I think it was a Louisville guy) he mistook for a dog...

Marcus doesn't like to organize dog fights. Too much work. He'd rather participate in 'em directly.
