The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York was formed in 1842 and officially organized in 1845, and is one the first organized baseball teams. The team used the rules drafted by Alexander Cartwright and, in 1849, originated the use of the shortstop position. The club pre-dates the American Civil War by over a decade.
