Favorite MomentBeing a Cubs fan in New Jersey is difficult. I don't get to enjoy the comaraderie and fellowship that a hometown fan does. I also do not get to enjoy Wrigley Field, the solace of the losing season. My favorite sports moment occurred during my first pilgrimage to Chicago and Wrigley. I arranged to stay in town for a week with some friends of my then roommate and purchased a ticket to three games against the Marlins. It just so happens that one of those three games was a souvenier day, an Andre Dawson baseball card. Sweet!! My favorite player!! I knew the Hawk worked for the Marlins, but he usually doesn't travel with the team. I guess the Cubs asked him to come for the occasion, because there he was hitting fungos to the outfielders. When he was finished, and as he headed towards the visiting dugout, I went down behind the dugout and he stopped to sign my baseball card. I was an adult at the time, but I felt like I was 12. After he signed mine, a group formed and he signed for about two dozen kids and adults. I went back down and had him sign the scoresheet from my program to give as a thank you gift to the guys I was staying with. Hawk also sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" that day. That game, and that week in Chicago, firsts for me, were unforgettable.

Favorite AthletesWhen I was younger and becoming a fan of professional sports, I chose Andre Dawson as my favorite player because his baseball card was one of my first. The following season he joined the Cubs, which is why I became a Cubs Fan in Southern New Jersey, Phillies territory. My admiration grew as I learned more about him as a ballplayer and as a person. He routinely received recognition for his work in the community while piling up the on-field accolades - Gold Gloves, All-Star appearances, MVP, etc. As many do, I believe that Hawk deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, and with steroid rumors casting doubt upon the stats being compiled by his successors, I believe that those put up by Hawk should be viewed more favorably.
