In college basketball action last night, the 20th-ranked University of Kentucky Wildcats were defeated on their home court by Gardner-Webb, a team that finished just 9-21 last season (tied for seventh in the mid-major Atlantic Sun Conference). In fact, G-W not only beat Kentucky, they whupped them pretty handily, by a score of 84-68!
Kentucky, who hadn't lost a regular-season game to a mid-major since falling to Western Kentucky on Nov. 15, 2001, is the all-time winningest program in Division I history, but that meant nothing in their first game under new coach Billy Gillispie. Gardner-Webb opened up an early 16-point lead, shot 53% from the floor against a supposedly strong UK defense, and never looked back, winning by 16. Former walk-on (seriously!) Grayson Flittner led the way for G-W with 22 points, and his team will advance to the next round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.
The only question left now is whether this win is more impressive than Appalachian State's landmark victory at Michigan in football earlier this year.
