[edit] Biography

Anthony "Tony" Keith Gwynn was born May 9,1960 in Los Angeles, California and played his entire Hall of Fame career in rightfield with the San Diego Padres. Gwynn was not a standard model rightfielder. He was not a prototypical slugger and also had a somewhat chubby frame and spoke in a soft voice. But Gwynn was blessed with amazing hand-eye coordination and a great batting eye. Gwynn also had deceptive speed, stealing a career high of 56 bases in 1987. He also worked hard to become one of the better outfielders in the game, earning 5 Gold Gloves as well.

Tony Gwynn led the National League in batting average on a record-tying 8 occasions, topping out at a whopping .394 during the strike-shortened 1994 season. He finished his career with a .338 average. That .338 average is 20th on the all-time career list, but first among all players who started their career after World War II.

Tony Gwynn never won an MVP award, but did garner MVP votes in 12 separate seasons. After his career ended, he returned to San Diego State University to coach the baseball team in the school's home stadium, aptly named Tony Gwynn Stadium. He also does color commentary for ESPN on occasion.

Tony Gwynn is brother of former MLB player Chris Gwynn, father of Tony Gwynn Jr and also father of R&B artist Anisha Nicole.

[edit] Scouting Report

An amazing contact hitter with outstanding bat control... Gwynn's willingness to walk was average at best, but his understanding of the strike zone was tremendous... Not a particularly powerful hitter, but added above-average power in the second half of his career... A slow baserunner, but very smart on the basepaths... An average defender until he lost his range at the tail end of his career... One of the best pure contact hitters ever.
