Tom Wittum (Thomas Howard Wittum) was born on January 11, 1950 in Berwyn, Illinois. After going to high school at Round Lake (IL), Wittum attended Northern Illinois University. Wittum made his professional debut in the NFL in 1973 with the San Francisco 49ers. He played for the San Francisco 49ers for his entire 5 year career.

Most people believe that 1973 was Tom Wittum's best year, as he had a 43.7 yard punt average.
