[edit] Trivia

  • Won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1967.
  • Won the Cy Young Award in 1969.
  • On July 9, 1969, versus the Chicago Cubs, took a perfect game into the 9th inning. With one out in the ninth, Jim Qualls (a rookie backup outfielder) singled, breaking up the no hitter. The next batter grounded into a double play; Seaver faced the minimum.
  • Named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year in 1969.
  • Set a modern Major League record for most consecutive strikeouts in a game on April 22, 1970, versus the San Diego Padres with 10 straight Ks. He struck out 19 total in that game, tying the record set by Steve Carlton for most strikeouts in a nine inning game. (That record has since been broken by Kerry Wood, Randy Johnson, and twice by Roger Clemens).
  • Won his 300th game on August 4, 1985, beating the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium -- on Phil Rizzuto Day.
  • The New York Mets retired his number (#41) in 1988. To date, he is the only Mets player to have his uniform retired by the team.
  • Seaver was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on January 7, 1992, with 425 of 430 votes calling for his induction -- the highest percentage of yeas in Hall history (98.84%).
  • Seaver is a member of the Mets Hall of Fame (1992), the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame (2003), and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame (2006).
