Tired of Tiger Woods

I am ready to possibly get some heat from some readers for this article but oh well.

I am mainly a NHL hockey fan with my interest being the Pittsburgh Penguins, but I follow all sports and really enjoy golf. Tiger Woods is close to being the greatest golfer to ever play the game...he is still behind Jack Nicklaus in wins and major wins.....and I do think he will eventually pass him up, but I am tired of no one challenging him during a tournment.  Ever tournment his is in it is 24/7 coverage of Tiger, I want a pro golfer to step up to the plate and challenge him.  The PGA Championship that was completed today bored me, I knew he was going to win and I knew CBS was going to show him constantly.  As an avid golf fan I am disappointed in the pro golfers today for not challenging Tiger Woods.

Jack Nicklaus had a big-time rivalry with Arnold Palmer, and then also had to compete against Gary Player, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, and Hale Irwin.  But the big rivalry was Jack vs. Arnie, it made golf exciting.

Who is Tiger's rival? Phil Mickelson? Ernie Els? Sergio Garcia? Adam Scott? Retief Goosen? Jim Furyk? Zach Johnson? Vijay Singh?  None of the players majors are anywhere near a rival to Mr. Woods.  Mickelson has been non-exsistent it seems all year, and I am getting tired of hearing himwhine a lot more lately.  Els turns it up a notch on Sunday to finish in the top-5, probably because he has no pressure on him.  Garcia blew the British Open and has not lived up to expectations. Scott only has I beleive 1 top-10 finish in a major is his career. Goosen has been non-exsistent all year long. Furyk should have won the US Open and blew it. Zach Johnson is having a good year, but does he want the spotlight? And lastly, Singh is getting old fast.

The ideal rival would be either Mickelson or Garcia but neither can go head to toe with Tiger Woods.  I have always hoped for Els to contend with Woods but can't get over the hump.  Golf is getting boring to me watching Tiger dominate so easily, and I think it is bad for golf as a whole.  The golfers that try to step up to the plate do not have the talent aka Rory Sabbatini and Stephen Ames, one of the players mentioned above has to be the rival.

Of course the ratings are high when Tiger is playing and in contention to win a tournment, but how much higher would those ratings be if there was a huge rivalry.  Imagine 3 out of the 4 majors coming down to Woods and either Garcia, Mickelson, or Els "duking" it out.  The ratings would skyrocket.

Please PGA Tour players someone step up, make golf more exciting, and give Tiger a challenge.

P.S.  - I am in no way saying Tiger is bad and doesn't deserve to win.  He is the best player in the game physically and mentally, and works hard.

Do you think the other Tour members aren't trying? Tiger's just that far out in front of everyone else. No one's going to catch up with him -- he'll have to stumble mightily before others are even in the same picture.

Tiger IS very good, and exceeds everyone else, but if Tiger Woods played against someone in his league (so to speak), who would win? Someone like Jack Nicklaus, or Arnold Palmer...

Agreed with Wfrazerjr. He would not dominate them, and it would be a great matchup. I AM convinced he is the best ever. He's in his early 30's, and is close to getting more championships than anyone in history, and those other guys have been playing for a while.

No freaking way. They'd be good matches, but Tiger'd win his fair share and I think the majority of threesomes with those two. He's the best ever, period.

I think Tiger would dominate Nicklaus and Palmer. His raw physical ability is like no one that's ever played the game.

I think he would win his fair-share, but I also think it wouldn't be so easy for him and he would have someone to worry about. There is no way he would dominate Nicklaus, it would be pretty even matched I think.

Golf is a very mental game. Tiger would win his fair share against the all time greats, but he wouldn't win them all. You can bet that on Sunday, if Nicklaus would have been in Els's shoes, he wouldn't have missed those puts at 9 and 11 and would have made Tiger play more aggressively. I'm not saying he would have won--particularly if he had spotted Woods that much of a lead going into the final round--but he would have made it more interesting. Woods didn't play his best golf on Sunday, and a Nicklaus would have made it interesting. I expect the real competition from Woods will probably come from someone we don't know yet. Someone who is young enough not to be intimidated by Woods and then who gets hot (like Johnny Miller in his prime) and contends for a few years. I don't know that anyone will knock Woods off his seat at the top of the game for another decade, but like you, I'm hoping for a suitable rival.

How is it fair to Tiger to say something like this? I can understand how you feel, but it's not his fault he's just that much better than everyone else. If you're tired of Tiger, you must be tired of Roger Federer too. I'm not tired of either of them.

That's pretty lame to say you're tired of Tiger. It's not like he plays for a team, where if he beats your team, it sucks the wind out of your city.

You're fooling yourself. Nicklaus played for almost 30 years. So of course, his opponents were able to rack up some wins. Look at Tiger's opponents. Other than Watson, Casper, and Palmer, Vijay and Phil have more wins than any of Nicklaus' other opponents. And Tiger's played for about 1/3 the time that Jack did. If you need to, wait until the END of Tiger's career, you'll see he blew away the best, and the best were pretty darn good. Golf is a much deeper sport nowadays, which makes his dominance ALL THAT MUCH MORE DOMINANT!
