Tim Raines highlights Hall of Fame Ballot "Rookies"

11
Vote

by Kelsdad

The Baseball Hall of Fame elections for 2009 will be announced on Jaunary 8th, the ballot this year contains 25 names, fourteen repeaters and eleven first timers, including a special exemption given to the deceased Rod Beck. Tim "Rock" Raines, he of the 23 major league seasons, 2605 lifetime hits and a career total of 808 stolen bases which ranks fifth all-time, is the only newcomer with a remote chance of election.

Raines was a six-time All-Star during his career who led the league four straight seasons in stolen bases (1981-1984). He was the NL batting champ in 1986 (.334), twice led in runs and once in doubles...and that was it. Despite the offensive prowess of the Montreal Expos during the early to mid-80's, Raines was overshadowed by some other teammates, most notably Andre Dawson and Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter.

According to the Hall of Fame Monitor, which only figures offensive production, Raines is not close to Hall of Fame material, and, defensively, Raines was an average at best left-fielder, which should further reduce his chances.

I would not be at all surprised if out of the remaining ten first timers most if not all receive less than five percent of the votes cast, which permanently removes them from future consideration on the Writer's Ballot.

The other first timers:

Tim Raines, Brady Anderson, Rod Beck,  Shawon Dunston, Chuck Finley, Travis Fryman, David Justice, Chuck Knoblauch, Robb Nen, Jose Rijo, and Todd Stottlemyre.

The HOF monitor says that 100 points is "a good possibility". Raines has 90, so I wouldn't say it calls him "not close to HOF material". It does take into account position, although not quality of defense. The list of people below him isn't too encouraging, although this doesn't really play well to Raines' strengths - there's nothing about OBP and very little about SBs, two of the things he did best, and it only uses raw offensive numbers, while Raines played in an average to slightly below-average offensive era. It's more a representation of how the voters look at the ballot than whether or not they are actually deserving, and the thoughts of the voters has changed (or is changing) a little bit since this was created. Still, the list of people below Raines isn't very encouraging. You're right, the rest of the newbies on the ballot are awful.

Mattingly's HOF Monitor is 133.5, and played nine fewer seasons.

A tidbit about Raines:

Tim Raines admitted to being a cocaine user and that he used to get high during games. Raines told reporters that he would keep a vial of coke in his pocket and would slide headfirst while stealing to make sure the vial wouldn't break. http://athom...izarre.shtml

If Raines ever got into the HOF, look for this to resurface as a defense for Bonds, McGwire, Clemens, Palmeiro, etc.

It's how he got the nickname "Rock" - as in a rock of cocaine...

If the 90s-00s are the steroid era, what about the coke days of the 80s?

LTs only sober moment of the '80s is when he snapped Theisman's leg in half. He would be the bronze statue that welcomes you to the Yayo of 8-0 wing.

If Raines played at another position, I'd say he was a Hall of Famer. But as an outfielder, he seems to be just good and not great. He has the stolen bases, a decent career average of .294, and a solid career OBP of .385. But there's nothing really great about his career that stands out. He never had a season with 200 hits. He never had a season with 70 RBI. He never had a season with 20 HR. He only led the league in SBs 4 times. He had longevity, though. And he was solid in terms of average and OBP his entire career. But as an outfielder, I don't think he has enough to get in. But people love stolen bases as a stat, so you never know.

Cocaine will likely not count against Raines for two reasons:

1. He came clean, unlike the steroid users.

2. Cocaine does not improve an athlete's performance, it's detrimental to performance. Steroids are taken to help.

Tim Raines may not have been clean off the field, but he was clean ON the field. And unlike the BALCO Brothers (Bonds, McGwire, Conseco), Raines reformed himself and admitted his mistakes.

Isn't refusing to admit culpability why Rose will never get in? If that's so, why should any of the cheats? As well, there are plenty of cocaine users in. Raines may have to wait until 2010, but he'll get in.
