They're Lucky They Have Him

No introductory paragraph here. This is what's bothering me today:

The qualifications for a save are ( via MLB.com)

"1) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning;

2) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batters he faces), or

3) He pitches for at least three innings."

I personally think that the definition of a save should only include the second qualification. If you're a major league pitcher and you can't get three batters out without giving up three runs, you really shouldn't be a major league pitcher. The second qualification actually involves "saving" the game, as the game is actually in jeopardy in such a situation. The third qualification is extremely ridiculous. Pitch the last three innings and you get a save? Are you kidding me?

Tonight, the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader. The final score was 30-3. Now, the final score in itself is outrageous, but if you looked at the box score, you'd find that Kason Gabbard picked up the win (talk about run support), and Daniel Cabrera took the loss. You'll also see that Wes Littleton picked up the save. In a 30-3 ballgame, there was a save earned. Now, sure, Texas scored 10 runs in the 8th and 6 runs in the 9th to end up with the 30 runs. Even so, when Littleton entered the game, the score was 14-3. I think Sammy Sosa could have earned the save at that point.

The save is a outdated, overrated statistic, and hopefully the time will come where it will either be revised or eliminated completely as a measure of effectiveness for closers.

I about fell out of my chair when they explained this on the MASN telecast. That's almost as ridiculous as the score of the game. Wait ... on second thought, it's MORE ridiculous.

Well couldnt you just get rid of the stupid 3 inning rule and have the problem solved?

That still leaves the problem of the 3-run save. You could give up a two-run homer and still get the save. I think they need to eliminate that part of the save rule as well.

if saves are such a ridiculous stat, then why is it so hard to find good guys to get them? the 3 inning rule may be a bit ridiculous, but this guy now has 1 save on the season... is it really that big of a problem

Any other questions why Gossage and the others won't see the Hall of Fame? Honoring someone for something so fucking useless tarnishes everyone and everything else about the Hall.

I would take it down to two runs or maybe even one and then abolish the 3 inning rule.

Mussina didn't make it out of the 2nd inning the other day on however many days rest and youre going to get down on a set-up man getting a "ridiculous" stat for showing up and pitching a full 9 outs? Better check yourselves on this methinks.

Its not a ridiculous stat, but yes its ridiculous that a guy comes in with a 14-3 lead and gets a save. What exactly did he save??

For one, he saved the rest of the bullpen from having to throw. Considering that this was the first game of a doubleheader, I give Littleton full marks for throwing three innings to give Ron Washington full use of his pen for the second game, which he needed with John Rheinecker (0-1, 17 ER in 18 innings covering his last four starts going in) on the bump.

Of all the problems in baseball, the silly save rule is maybe in the top 200. Maybe.

It took a 30-3 game to really spotlight how ridiculous the save rule is. I agree with Simms that the 3 inning rule should be abolished. Will be interesting to see if Selig does anything about this or if he will pretend a pitcher didn't get a save in a 30-3 game and ignore it like he ignored the steroids problem until Congress forced him to do something.

You know, the determination of who gets a win can be equally as silly as a save. If the starting pitcher leaves before 5 innings, and leaves with a lead, the official scorer can determine who deserves the win most. A player can come into a game with a lead, blow the lead, then if the team comes back, he gets the win. A pitcher can go 0.1 innings and get a win just by getting the last out before their team took the lead. There's a lot of silly ways a pitcher can get a win or not get a win. A guy could go 8 scoreless innings, but if he leaves with the game tied, he can't get the win no matter what. I remember when Rich Garces was 8-0 out of the bullpen for the Red Sox. That was bizarre, and mostly luck, pitching at just the right time to get the win. I think it's just as strange as when pitchers get saves. And the 3 inning save is so rare anyway, it usually only happens 2 or 3 times a season at the most. And the people who get them probably won't be chasing Hoffman for most all-time saves.

The only problem with that is that nobody views wins and losses by a relief pitcher as relevant. It's not the same with saves, which is the statistic of choice for measuring the effectiveness of closers. Joe Borowski has 35 saves and a 5.44 ERA. Are you telling me he's having a better season than Billy Wagner, who has 29 saves and a 1.77 ERA? If you go by saves, then sure he is. It's ridiculous. As for the 3-inning save, it almost exclusively happens in a blowout, which renders it ineffective, as the game doesn't need to be saved at that point, it just needs to be finished.

I would never measure relief pitchers by saves. They're a weird stat as it is. A pitcher on a bad team might have 25 saves but be a better reliever than a dude with 40 saves for a good team. The best stat for relievers is WHIP, opponents batting average, opponents OBP, slugging, and OPS. ERA and saves are not good stats for measuring a reliever's effectiveness.

See...you know that, and I know that...but the casual fan will look at the stats and say, "Jose Valverde is the best closer in the majors, he has the most saves." If they reworked the save rule so it wasn't so easy to get a save, it'd be a better indicator than it is now.

I actually like letting casual fans think they can graps statistics and the entire game of baseball, especially since the casual fan has no idea what a save actually is. It's funny.
