The Top 10 Toughest Places to Play in College Football

by user Happyskinny

Here is my list. A lot of people probably are going to disagree with me, especially if you are a fan of a school with a good football stadium/atmosphere. Check it out, let me know what you guys think.

1. Neyland Stadium, Tennessee It always has 100,000 plus in attendance and on a noise level its gotta be top 5.

tennessee.jpg

2. Kyle Field, Texas A&M It seats over 80,000 people, and the students are standing during the entire game, which is amazing. Known to have a great crowd as they are called the "12th man."

kylefield.jpg

3. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Florida ("The Swamp") Loud fans with a great stadium that makes you feel like there are 25,000 more people there than there actually are. Gotta love the Gator Chomp too. Top 5 loudest.

theswamp.jpg

4. Ohio Stadium, Ohio State ("The Horseshoe") The horseshoe is great. 100,000 people screaming, and everyone knows the stadium even if you don't know college football.

ohio-stadium2.jpg

5. Memorial Stadium, Clemson ("Death Valley") Football gamedays at Clemson are amazing. Fans are deafening loud, and everyone is super nice. Home to "The most exciting 25 seconds in College Football" when the Tigers rub Howards Rock and run down the hill. Top 5 loudest.

deathvalley.jpg

6. Autzen Stadium, Oregon Great fans, only seats 59,000 but you'd think it sat 85,000 with how loud it is.

oregon.jpg

7. Michigan Stadium, Michigan ("The Big House") Biggest football stadium in the United States, it exudes tradition.

michigan.jpg

8. Lane Stadium, Virginia Tech Similar to Autzen in that there are not that many people, but it gets real loud, and it feels like the fans are right on top of the field. Great atmosphere.

VT.jpg

9. Tiger Stadium, Louisiana State ("Death Valley") The other Death Valley, haha. Great fans, have not been there, but from everything I've heard, its amazing.

LSU.jpg

10. Sanford Stadium, Georgia Very good fans, good tradition, Nice stadium nesstled in a valley.

As much as I like Wisconsin football and Camp Randall Stadium, it falls just outside the top 10. I like this list, though I'm surprised to see Sanford Stadium on here ahead of the 100,000+ Beaver Stadium at Penn State.

The reason Penn state isn't up there is because it's hard for the crowd to matter when you are down 3 TD's at home in every game for the last 10 years. Move LSU up the list to #2 behind UT, other than that a good list.

Having been both a Virginia Tech and a Clemson student, I'd have to say that Lane Stadium should be higher on the list than Memorial Stadium. The atmosphere at Lane is just more electric, which could have alot to do with the smaller size. But I'd have to wonder what the Home Field advantage would be for each of those stadiums would be, in terms of wins and losses.

Where's Notre Dame on the list, or the Rose Bowl, or the Orange Bowl? I would think the most hallowed stadium in college football, Notre Dame, should on the list before Sanford, Lane, or Autzen.

The list wasn't about the "most hallowed stadium", it was about the toughest stadiums to play in. The Rose Bowl and the Orange Bowl definitely do not inspire fear in opposing players like these stadiums do. Not to mention this is only a top 10.

In the last five years, Norte Dame is 4-2, 3-3, 3-3, 5-1 and 4-2 at home. That's 19-11 overall. Notre Dame having only a 63% winning percentage at home doesn't really say much for it being a tough place to play. At least not in the last five years, especially compared to most of the places on the list.

Daryl K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium never makes lists like this. UT has been practically unbeatable at home the last decade. It's not hostile like a lot of the stadiums listed, but I'd think that a team being that dominant at home would make teams not want to play there.

Everyone knows Nebraska is one of the toughest and loudest places to play and since Memorial Stadium is under construction and adding more seats its gonna be even louder so hopefully that will get us in the top 10. I swear nobody likes Husker football besides those of us who live in Nebraska. So how bout we put Nebraska on the list and think about Penn St. and Oklahoma.

Beaver Stadium should definitely be in the top 5. When I line up in the tunnel to do pregame (I'm a trumpet player in the Blue Band), I can hear the stadium structure rumbling. It's absolutely insane. Lane Stadium is unimpressive at best, and should not be in the top 10. Michigan is not as loud as one would expect, considering they usually have over 110,000 in attendance. Tennessee's stadium and the Swamp are ridiculous as well. I would never want to have to play there.

Sure if u wanna be technical, its not the loudest, but with over 112,000 average attendance and a record 117,516 attendance last year, Michigan definitly deserves to be on this list. Also, when the opposing team doesn't come out for the National Anthem, and waits until kick-off, you know their scared shitless! Lastly, they are adding more seats next year, 118,000 seats baby!!!
