Born on November 7, 1857 in Paterson, New Jersey, The Only Nolan (Edward Sylvester Nolan) played for the Indianapolis Blues, Cleveland Spiders, Pittsburgh Pirates, Wilmington Quicksteps and Philadelphia Phillies over the course of his 5 year career. Nolan broke into the bigs on May 1, 1878 with the Indianapolis Blues, and put up a 2.57 ERA in 347 innings pitched in 1878, his rookie year.

Most people believe that The Only Nolan's best season was 1878, when he posted a 2.57 ERA, won 13 games and struck out 125 batters.
