My how the times have changed.Madison Square Garden was once THE place for basketball. The greats were there every night, Frazier, Bradley, Reed, Ewing. Some of the opposing greats have had their best nights there, Jordan, Miller, and the list goes on. There was never an empty seat, and when games went on, the Garden "Rocked". How many nights can you remember watching Knicks games, hearing Marv Albert say "yes!" followed by the loudest crowd roar in the world! I know that is what I remember about Knick games through my entire life.
But that is no more. I turned about a quarter and a half of the Knicks Bucks game tonight. The game was close, the Knicks were down by 3 at the most while watching. They are fighting to make the playoffs, only 3 games back of the 8th playoff position in the Eastern conference. But was the Garden rocking? Was it filled to the brim? Were the fans pulling for their team the way NY fans do? The answer is a big fat NO!!
You could see empty seats on the camera. Court level had empty seats. That never happened in the Garden when the team was really good. Any time the Knicks made a play to keep them close, did the crowd roar? No. You heard a scant "yay", and a little cheering, but not the way it would be for a NY team in the greatest city. The Garden sounded like a ghost town.
Maybe it's because Isiah Thomas is arrogant, and actually thinks he has made a great team. Maybe it's the way James Dolan has run the team into the ground. Maybe it is because team acts like it had a major accomplishment by winning its 24th game. I am not sure, but whatever it is, Madison Square Garden for baseketball is a shell of what it used to be. Gone is the excitement of years gone by, and it is a crying shame.
