The Following NFL Coaches Are on the Hot Seat

20
Vote

by SSreporters

There are 4 more games left in the NFL regular season, and of course we will have firings, resignations, the whole ten yards. Whose job is in jeopardy? Let's break it down from division by division. All 32 coaches will be on here, and I'll state whether or not their ass could be gone.

AFC East

  1. Bill Belichick. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! No.
  1. Dick Jauron. He has only been Bills head coach for 2 years, they are 6-6, have only the Dolphins, Eagles, Giants and Jets to worry about. Jauron is fine in my book.
  1. Eric Mangini. Not yet. This is obviously a rebuilding stage, so if they stink again in 08, Mangini is toast.
  1. Cam Cameron. Yes. Art Shell Syndrome has arrived! Hate to say it, but rookie or not, I would not keep a coach that could lead my team to an 0-16 record.

AFC North

  1. Mike Tomlin. Coach of the year candidate in my opinion, so the answer is no.
  1. Romeo Crennel. Yes, he is burning. This latest loss to the Cardinals sent them to 7-5, still having to play against Cincy, the 49ers, the Jets, and the Bills, so if they can't make the playoffs because they didn't beat those teams, then Crennel is gone.
  1. Brian Billick. You obviously didn't watch last night's game did ya? Yes, they are 4-8, out of the playoff hunt after going 13-3 last year, that's a bit of a problem to me. The ineptitude at the offensive end is appalling, and Billick was the offensive co-ordinator for that 15-1 Vikings team. He's gone to me.
  1. Marvin Lewis. Big time yes. He turned the team around for 3 years in a row, made the playoffs.....but his inability to control his players, and the incompetence on the field will all but lead to a below .500 season. We've probably seen the end of Marv over there.

AFC South

  1. Tony Dungy. Nope.
  1. Jack Del Rio. He's turned that team from a laughing stock to a serious wild card contender. In all likelihood they will face the Chargers, who are the most difficult team to figure out in the AFC. So the answer is no.
  1. Gary Kubiak. The team has improved in Kubiak's second year with Houston. If that squad is healthy, they are very good. His job is fine.
  1. Jeff Fisher. Yes he is on the hot seat. This recent collapse by the Titans has struck them deep in their playoff chances. Vince Young is struggling because of the Madden curse, and if they lose to San Diego this weekend, their playoff hopes are not only wrecked, they could have some issues on whether or not Jeff gets the nod for next season.

AFC West

  1. Norv Turner. The name just screams hot seat even if San Diego wins out.
  1. Mike Shanahan. Big time yes. They've lost to Oakland, blew a 14 point lead to Chicago, got waxed by 38 against San Diego early in the year, this team is a mess. It's time to get rid of this guy.
  1. Lane Kiffin. Yes, only because Al Davis refuses to drink the potion.
  1. Herman Edwards. Uh.....yes. It's only his second year, but he has made some stupid decisions this year, and took him an eternity to get rid of Damon Huard, he forgot that University of Washington QB's almost never make it in the NFL.

NFC East

  1. Wade Phillips. <sarcasm> Yes. </sarcasm>
  1. Andy Reid. I think he'll take the year off to help his family, but if not, he's still on the hot seat. Last week against Seattle probably ended their season. If they try and make AJ Feeley win the game, instead of Brian Westbrook, that's wicked dumb.
  1. Joe Gibbs. You mean to tell me, he has been in the NFL for decades, and can't remember not to call back to back timeouts? Yes, he's on the hot seat.
  1. Tom Coughlin. These guys are just itching for a collapse, so.....yes. And if they face Seattle, Eli Manning is toast.

NFC North

  1. Mike McCarthy. No.
  1. Lovie Smith. To some extent, yes. His love fest with Gross Wrecksman cost them the Super Bowl, cost them 4 games this year, they need a QB BADLY!! Their defense has been atrocious, Mike Brown gets injured just grocery shopping.
  1. Rod Marinelli. Nope. Say what you want about the Lions season headed for the toilet again, but to start out 6-2 is pretty impressive. Now....protect Kitna so you protect his guarantee involving something....I don't know, saying you'd get 10 wins? Marinelli is fine.
  1. Brad Childress. Not a chance, he's gone.

NFC South

  1. Sean Payton. Oooohhh.......I don't think so Tim.
  1. Jon Gruden. So signing 150 QB's worked out huh? They're 8-4, and have the division locked up. No, he's fine.
  1. Bobby Petrino. Why in the hell does anyone sign Joey Harrington? No, because he is a rookie head coach.
  1. John Fox. Actually, yes. They've been contenders for years now, and every year, with Steve Smith and DeShaun Foster, they are a disappointment. It's obviously because of the injuries, but even when they were healthy, they were mediocre. If you can't win at home, that's a problem.

And finally.....

NFC West

  1. Mike Holmgren. You better believe it. The play calling logic of Walrus is beyond my worst imaginations (most involving John Madden and some bratwurst). Sure, they're 8-4, but that defense has bailed them out in every way, shape, or form for 2 weeks now
  1. Mike Nolan. Tough one here.....not just yet. They may have been a huge disappointment, but they've been super banged up, give him one more year.
  1. Ken Whisenhunt. Yeah right, if they had won both San Francisco games, they probably win this division. He's fine.
  1. Scott Linehan. You better believe it is burning. QB play is garbage, the receivers are getting old, defense is garbage, I'd go on and on and on. He's done and dusted in my opinion.

So, it's your turn. Is there someone that should or should not be on the hot seat?

Hot seats - Bobby Petrino. Why? No Number 7 running the offense, plus they got smacked by the St. Louis Lambs. Lovey Smith (if he doesn't get rid of Grossman asap!). Marvin Lewis, only due to the lack of control of the off-field problems.

No coach is on the hot seat after just one season in the NFL. Petrino had great success in college, and it's not his fault that his starting QB got convicted of multiple felonies. No way he's on the hot seat. And while I agree that patience wears thin in Chicago because of the QB situation, I have a hard time believing that a coach one year removed from the Super Bowl is in that much trouble.

Reading the article would help. I listed all 32 coaches, and said no only because he is a rookie coach.

I hope that wasn't directed at me, SS, because I agree with you. I was disputing Cougar saying that Petrino is on the hot seat.

I don't agree that Romeo Crennel is on the hot seat. Cleveland had no expectations for this year, and then they are 7-5 with some seriously talented offensive pieces in Kellen Winslow and Braylond Edwards to go along with Derek Anderson's emergence. And, Chicago's defense has ben atrocious because it has been ravaged with injuries all season long. If they were healthy, they would be much closer to a playoff berth.

I agree on Crennel. Expectations in Cleveland are low enough that they could look at an 8-8 season as something to build on. They have to give him AT LEAST one more year running that prolific young offense that looks better and better all the time.

The only guys I can really see getting fired are Cameron, Fox, maybe Lewis, Gibbs will retire, and Reid's good for another year,

I don't know why so many people online are talking about Jeff Fisher's job being in jeopardy. There has been no real talk of his job being in trouble. He's the longest tenured coach in the NFL, he has the youngest team in the NFL with a horribly underrated defense. They've struggled the past few games because Haynesworth has been missing (check the numbers - with him out, they allowed an average of 100 more rushing yards per game, and allowed 6 rushing TDs in three games when they had allowed just 3 in the previous 8 games). They have also struggled with Ahmard Hall out. Don't laugh about the importance of a fullback - in this offense, Hall is HUGE as a very talented blocker and a very good receiver.

But Vince Young should rebound next year, and they should be in position to draft a good wide receiver that can lead this team out of the doldrums they've experienced this year (my money is on Limas Sweed). No way Fisher's job is in trouble.

I agree. I'm a huge fisher fan. The coach gets it done. This team was absolutely decimated by FA after their SB run, they made a quick fix rebuild and got nothing, now they are in official rebuilding mode. By next year, this will be a team to fear. They were a laughing stock 2 years ago and are now on the verge of a potential WC birth in the toughest division in football Of course...for those of you who know fisher's coaching lineage, you understand why i like him (looking at you manny)

Could it be because the Titans haven't been back to post-season for a long time? Also given the current situation with Petrino in Atlanta, remember that this fellow named Vick is no longer calling the plays and it's starting to show.

Hopefully, the Ravens get rid of Brian Billick. The Ravens inability to score is painfully dreadful. Billick is not the genius, he is made out to be. That Vikings team was extremely talented. Billick can't groom a QB to save his life. He should be fired despite being given an extension before the start of the season. I would find Cam Cameron. The Dolphins weren't going anywhere this season. Their starting QB, Trent Green nearly died TWICE this season. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but everybody should have known he was one hit away from IR. Then Cam loses Ronnie Brown and Zach Thomas (He really needs to retire before he has dementia sooner than expected). Miami should be rebuilding.

Baltimore showed its true colors last week against New England last Monday night. It's hard to even phathom that this team won a Super Bowl a few years ago and look at the Ravens now. Baltimore had New England on the ropes, dagger in hand and ready to put it in their hearts. What did they do? They stopped and checked for a pulse. BAD MOVE! When you have a team on the ropes, get the dagger out, put it in their damned hearts, twist it and walk the hell away!

When he was in philly, I assumed he was the heir apparent to Jim Johnson...but with Johnson still there, Rivera (wisely) moved on to a DC job. If Andy Reid should leave, I'd be fine with Rivera taking the helm, as JJ has to desire to be a head coach.

That's a good question, JuT. The Cowboys talked to Rivera last off-season as part of their coaching search. At the time, I was furious that the Cowboys passed. In hindsight, I have to say that I'm happy they did. But I still think it's shocking that Rivera isn't a head coach yet. I think it'll happen this spring. I think he'd be a solid fit in New York.

I don't think Shannahan or Fisher will be fired. Both are very good coaches that would be hard to replace. Besides, it's not Shannahan's fault his RB's keep getting heart. Fisher is helping to build them into a strong force in a very tough division. Firing him wouldn't make sense

True, but how much longer can Shanahan blame his team's shortcomings on his players. For years, it was that he didn't have a good enough QB. Well, he's gone through - what - four QBs now, I think, including a top-10 pick in Cutler. And they're still not winning. And they seem to be getting worse. I think Shanahan can get away with blaming his personnel one more year, but no more than that.

As long as Pat Bowlen owns the Broncos Shanahan will not get fired. He just signed an extension before the season and is under contract until 2011. He is the most secure head coach in the NFL. He leaves when he wants to

Pat Bowlen has publicly stated Shanahan will be the coach of the Broncos for as long as he wants to. Look at the mess they are in right now. Cuz Shanahan has all the power. Even though they have a person called a GM Shanahan runs that team.
