The Early Mock (4/15/07)

by user Drpatriot

To start off, I must sincerely apologize for the recent lack of updating the Early Mocks. Real life has become very busy lately and I'm afraid that this could be my final Early Mock. It's been a nice run and I hope to keep it up next year, but until then, I'll see you all later!

Will Oakland make the smart move and draft the "sure thing" out of Georgia Tech?
Will Oakland make the smart move and draft the "sure thing" out of Georgia Tech?

1          Oakland: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech: Many signs point to Oakland receiving Johnson; whispers of a trade with the Packers involving Randy Moss are once again on the rise, and word is that Daunte Culpepper could also be heading soon to Oakland.

2          Detroit: Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin: The Lions expected to have Johnson here, but instead select an offensive tackle that should give them security for years to come.

3          Cleveland: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame: Most teams rank Russell higher, but Cleveland is in love with Quinn and makes their move.

4          Tampa Bay: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson: The Bucs are in a tight spot here, but the temptation to aid their defense is too high and they pass up on Russell.

5          Miami (from Arizona)*: JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU: The Cardinals entertain all offers, and a sweet one from Miami hits the spot. The Dolphins look to add young talent at the quarterback position. Arizona receives Miami’s first-, their later second-, and fourth-round picks.

6          Washington: Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas: The Redskins missed out on a glory spot in the draft, but are content to bolster their defense as well.

Is JaMarcus Russell a future Miami Dolphins?
Is JaMarcus Russell a future Miami Dolphins?

7          Minnesota: LaRon Landry, FS, LSU: Landry is a force to be reckoned with, and the Vikings do not hesitate to add him to their backfield.

8          Atlanta (from Houston): Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville: Bobby Petrino, Okoye’s old coach throws him a bone and brings him in as the Falcons’ new premier prospect.

9          Arizona (from Miami)*: Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma: The Cardinals don’t mind bringing in a very talented runningback to complement, and eventually replace, Edgerrin James.

10        Houston (from Atlanta): Levi Brown, OT, Penn State: The Texans try to bring in an actual offensive line to protect their second starting quarterback in their short history.

11        San Francisco: Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska: The 49ers are at a very sweet position and have many good choices here. They decide that Carriker, who will play defensive end in their 3-4 alignment, is the best fit for their team.

Will San Francisco select the massive Carriker as their next star DE?
Will San Francisco select the massive Carriker as their next star DE?

12        Buffalo: Patrick Willis, MLB, Ole Miss: The Bills add the best available defensive player to replace the veteran presence of Takeo Spikes.

13        St. Louis: Alan Branch, DT, Michigan: Branch is sliding a bit, and the Rams are delighted to use their first-round pick on the massive tackle from the Wolverines.

14        Carolina: Greg Olsen, TE, Miami: The Panthers look to add a strong presence at tight end, and Olsen seems the best candidate.

15        Pittsburgh: Leon Hall, CB, Michigan: The Steelers can’t pass up on the best cornerback in the draft this far into the first round.

16        Green Bay: Marshawn Lynch, RB, California: After a month of absence, I still can’t see a problem with this pick.

Did I ever have the Packers drafting someone other than Marshawn Lynch?
Did I ever have the Packers drafting someone other than Marshawn Lynch?

17        Jacksonville: Reggie Nelson, FS, Florida: The Jaguars add on a speedy free safety to help in both run and pass support

.

18        Cincinnati: Lawrence Timmons, OLB, Florida State: The Bengals add a good cover presence at WLB with Timmons.

19        Tennessee: Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio State: The Titans can’t resist adding Ginn as another speedy target for Vince Young.

20        New York Giants: Jon Beason, OLB, Miami: The Giants like Beason’s potential at many positions in their linebacker corps, and will try him at every position to see where he can fit best.

Is Meachem the next great Cowboys receiver in the making?
Is Meachem the next great Cowboys receiver in the making?

21        Denver: Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida: The Broncos add Moss, a literally massive presence at defensive end, to their pass rush.

22        Dallas: Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee: Meachem is the future for the Cowboys at WR and he will learn from two of the best in the business: Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens.

23        Kansas City: Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC: Jarrett is a strong possession presence and will add a new target for Damon Huard or Brodie Croyle.

24        New England (from Seattle): Paul Posluszny, ILB, Penn State: Posluszny will learn and train in the Patriots system for a year or two before he makes it onto the field, but the wait will definitely be worth it.

25        New York Jets: Aaron Ross, CB, Texas: Ross will replace Ty Law, who was missed sorely last year.

26        Philadelphia: Michael Griffin, SS, Texas: The second Longhorn defensive back in a row off the board, the Eagles look to replace Michael Lewis in their secondary.

Is Dwayne Bowe going to be as bad as I think he is, or will he have success with Philip Rivers and the Chargers?
Is Dwayne Bowe going to be as bad as I think he is, or will he have success with Philip Rivers and the Chargers?

27        New Orleans: Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas: The Saints make the tough choice between Houston and Darrelle Revis, but they decide they like Houston’s speed and tenacity.

28        New England: Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh: The Patriots make the easy choice between Revis and…well…no one.

29        Baltimore: Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan: The Ravens look for security when Jonathan Ogden retires, and Staley is the best available.

30        San Diego: Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU: I really dislike Dwayne Bowe. I don’t think he’s going to go anywhere. However, he is the highest WR left on most teams’ boards, and San Diego looks to make a good deal.

31        Chicago: Justin Blalock, OG, Texas: Blalock should be a decent fit on the Bears’ offensive line, who could use more run blocking strength to aid Cedric Benson.

32        Indianapolis: DeMarcus Tyler, DT, N.C. State: Justin Harrell has been rising and is a tempting pick, but the Colts decide to select the defensive tackle Tyler instead due to his strength and toughness up the middle.

I think Oakland could end up trading out of the pick. Calvin Johnson is clearly the right pick, but Oakland needs more than a WR. (Obviously.)

Russell won't fall past 3, and no way Detroit takes Thomas with Jeff Backus making big $ at LT.

Griffin is a FS, not an SS. Eagles will not be selecting him.

I don't know why I ever open these. All it does is increase my wonderment of what fantasy world you get your information from.

I can take criticism, but that's just rude. If you don't have anything constructive to say, don't comment.
