The Early Mock: Two-Round Edition (1/17/07)

by user Drpatriot

I know, I did a two-round edition two weeks ago. However, with all of the junior declarations finally out of the way, I thought it would be appropriate to do another one. I will be updating the first round weekly until the conclusion of the Super Bowl, when I will have another Two-Round Edition ready.

Could Gaines Adams become the first stud Arizona Cardinal defensive end?
Could Gaines Adams become the first stud Arizona Cardinal defensive end?

1 Oakland: JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU: If the Raiders do not grab a QB in free agency, expect them to take this exciting prospect out of LSU.

2 Detroit: Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin: Rumors are spreading that the Lions like Thomas, and Detroit could go for this if they sign a QB in free agency.

3 Cleveland: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame: The Browns hope that head coach Romeo Crennel was able to get the scoop about this QB from his old colleague, Charlie Weis, when he made this draft decision.

4 Tampa Bay: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech: The most talented WR in the draft, and an easy pick for the Buccaneers.

5 Arizona: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson: As the best tackle in the draft is gone, the Cardinals add a pass rusher to their defense who should add an immediate impact.

6 Washington: Alan Branch, DT, Michigan: Easy decision here. The Redskins need a presence in the middle and Branch is definitely a presence in the middle.

7 Minnesota: Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC: Another easy pick. The Vikings need a WR and Jarrett is the best WR on the board.

8 Houston: Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma: Houston is shocked that Peterson fell this far, and they will not make the mistake of passing on another elite runningback.

With Peterson still on the board, would Houston dare pass up another elite runningback?
With Peterson still on the board, would Houston dare pass up another elite runningback?

9 Miami: Leon Hall, CB, Michigan: The Dolphins could use some help in their secondary and Hall is the best player available at the position.

10 Atlanta: Laron Landry, S, LSU: Landry’s stock is soaring and the Falcons need help in their secondary.

11 San Francisco: Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio State: The 49ers have been looking for a good WR and Ginn fell right into their laps.

12 Buffalo: Levi Brown, OT, Penn State: Brown is a good offensive tackle who should give Buffalo some sorely needed help up front.

13 St. Louis: Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia: Moses is a game-changer and the Rams need a presence like that in their defensive front seven.

14 Carolina: Patrick Willis, MLB, Ole Miss: The Panthers could use an upgrade at linebacker and Willis could play either position for them.

15 Pittsburgh: Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska: The Steelers could use an upgrade at the defensive end position and Carriker is big and strong enough to play DE in the 3-4.

16 Green Bay: Marshawn Lynch, RB, California (not UCLA): The Packers need a rushing threat at RB and Lynch is an easy pick at this point in the draft.

Are the Steelers considering an upgrade at defensive end with Adam Carriker?
Are the Steelers considering an upgrade at defensive end with Adam Carriker?

17 Jacksonville: Paul Pozluszny, OLB, Penn State: Pat Thomas is not the ideal starter for the Jaguars and Pozluszny is the best player in the draft at the position.

18 Cincinnati: Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio State: Pitcock is a tough DT who could improve Cincinnati’s rush defense drastically.

19 Tennessee: LaMarr Woodley, DE, Michigan: Woodley is a speedy DE prospect who could easily be the next Freak for the Titans.

20 New York Giants: Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh: The Giants need desperate help in their secondary and Revis is one of the better cornerbacks to come out of college in recent years.

21 Denver: Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville: Okoye is exactly the type of prospect that Denver needs: a tough, pass-rushing DT.

22 Dallas: Justin Blalock, OG, Texas: The Cowboys need help all over their offensive line, and Blalock can help them at tackle or at guard.

Will Michael Bush's injury for the 2006 season prevent him from going into the first round, or will the Jets snap him up anyway?
Will Michael Bush's injury for the 2006 season prevent him from going into the first round, or will the Jets snap him up anyway?

23 Kansas City: Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina: Though this would be a terrible pick, Rice’s speed and size would undoubtedly be attractive to the Chiefs, who need a solid deep threat for Green or Croyle to throw to.

24 New England: Reggie Nelson, FS, Florida: Urban Meyer should send a full recommendation of Nelson to Belichick, who knows that Eugene Wilson’s time has definitely passed.

25 New York Jets: Michael Bush, RB, Louisville: Bush is a massive runningback who should give the Jets an extra boost in the backfield.

26 Philadelphia: Michael Griffin, SS, Texas: Michael Lewis has expired and Griffin should be an immediate improvement at the position.

27 New Orleans: Lawrence Timmons, OLB, Florida State: Timmons has had great production at FSU, even as a backup, and New Orleans should be excited to pick him up in the draft.

28 Indianapolis: DeMarcus Tyler, DT, N.C. State: Manny Lawson, Mario Williams, and John McCargo left N.C. State, but Tyler still performed. A worthy prospect for the Colts defense.

29 Baltimore: Tony Ugoh, OT, Arkansas: Word of Jonathan Ogden’s impending retirement looms, and even without his retirement the Ravens could still use a prospect at OT for his eventual replacement.

30 San Diego: Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU: San Diego lost last weekend because their wide receivers couldn’t catch balls; Dwayne Bowe has fantastic hands. Two plus two equals what?

Troy Smith to the Lions at #34 - crazy, or ingenius?
Troy Smith to the Lions at #34 - crazy, or ingenius?

31 New England: Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State: McCauley is a speedy prospect who can help in the defensive backfield, especially if Asante Samuel takes off.

32 Chicago: Zach Miller, TE, Arizona State: I’m sticking with this pick because it hasn’t stopped making sense throughout the playoffs.

33 Oakland: Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee: Somehow, the Raiders still have little-to-no wide receiver production, even with Randy Moss and Jerry Porter on their roster.

34 Detroit: Troy Smith, QB, Ohio State: A very different quarterback from anyone that the Lions have had recently (read: ever), Smith should add excitement to an offense in which excitement is very lacking. And don’t bring up the Championship game, because I could stop Smith if I had a month to do it.

35 Tampa Bay: Victor Abiamiri, DE, Notre Dame: Abiamiri’s stock dropped a little over the course of the season, but he still has the talent to make it in the NFL.

36 Cleveland: Aaron Sears, OT, Tennessee: Sears is a strong run blocker and will add a blocking presence on the Browns’ offensive line.

37 New York Jets: Daymeion Hughes, CB, California: The Jets are still reeling from the loss of Ty Law and Hughes has fantastic hands for a cornerback.

Could Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith be reunited again in Minnesota?
Could Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith be reunited again in Minnesota?

38 Arizona: Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan: Staley is a tough talent at tackle who should help fill the large hole (literally) left by Leonard Davis in the off-season.

39 Minnesota: Steve Smith, WR, USC: Only one round after drafting his teammate, Dwayne Jarrett, the Vikings add Steve Smith to their roster as well.

40 Minnesota: Aaron Ross, CB, Texas: Addressing a non-WR with their second pick, Ross will add strength and speed to the Vikings’ secondary.

41 Houston: Ryan Harris, OT, Notre Dame: Houston looks to add talent to their offensive line. About time.

42 Buffalo: Fred Bennett, CB, South Carolina: Even if Clements doesn’t leave, Bennett would be a strong addition to the Bills’ secondary.

43 Atlanta: Jeff Samardzija, WR, Notre Dame: There are whispers that Samardzija is close to coming to a decision about playing football or baseball, lowering his stock significantly and sending him all the way down to Atlanta at #43.

Kenny Irons draft stock is giong down the toilet, but does anyone actually know why?
Kenny Irons draft stock is giong down the toilet, but does anyone actually know why?

44 San Francisco: Buster Davis, ILB, Florida State: Davis would be a good injection of youth to the 49ers linebacking core, which is getting old at the ILB position.

45 New York Giants: Kenny Irons, RB, Auburn: The Giants’ runningback spot is vacated and Irons would be a good candidate to replace Tiki Barber.

46 St. Louis: Brandon Meriweather, S, Miami: The Rams draft this safety prospect from the U in the hopes that he can replace Adam Archuleta at safety because no one else has really been adequate.

47 Carolina: Chris Leak, QB, Florida: Leak’s impressive showing in the national championship game could rise his stock into the second-round range.

48 Pittsburgh: Josh Beekman, OG, Boston College: The Steelers failed to address their offensive line need in the first round and will thus do so in the second.

49 Green Bay: Aundrae Allison, WR, East Carolina: The Packers are interested in the second-round project pick out of East Carolina at the WR position.

A linebacker named Blades to the Bengals - mildly ironic or meant to be?
A linebacker named Blades to the Bengals - mildly ironic or meant to be?

50 Jacksonville: Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State: Insurance at the QB position for the Jaguars, who worry that Garrard and Quinn won’t be able to make it once Leftwich takes off for Detroit or Baltimore.

51 Cincinnati: H.B. Blades, OLB, Pittsburgh: Blades should give a nice boost to the Bengals’ linebacking core, which is currently suffering to high levels of criminal activity.

52 Tennessee: Tarrell Brown, CB, Texas: Brown is another speedy cornerback prospect who should add some solidity to the Titans secondary.

53 Seattle: Ben Grubbs, OG, Auburn: Grubbs is an extremely tough offensive guard who could someday fill Steve Hutchinson’s shoes.

54 Denver: Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia: Quentin Moses’s partner-in-crime breaches the Early Mock for the first time, giving Denver a speedy defensive end prospect to help their pass rush.

55 Dallas: Anthony Spencer, OLB, Purdue: Spencer will compete for the other OLB spot that isn’t occupied by Demarcus Ware in Dallas.

56 Kansas City: Ryan Kalil, C, USC: Kalil is the best lineman available and Kansas City needs any lineman available.

Is Tony Hunt the runningback that Philly needs, or is last week's pick of Brian Leonard a better selection?
Is Tony Hunt the runningback that Philly needs, or is last week's pick of Brian Leonard a better selection?

57 New Orleans: David Harris, MLB, Michigan: A tackling machine, the New Orleans Saints should by no means be afraid to draft consecutive linebackers.

58 New York Jets: Jarvis Moss, OLB, Florida: Moss is a converted DE with great physical skills but no real experience at the “elephant” position.

59 Philadelphia: Tony Hunt, RB, Penn State: Due to both rising stock and popular demand (actually, just Christof’s demand), Hunt looks to be a good fit with the Eagles running game as a close-yardage runner.

60 Tampa Bay: Prescott Burgess, OLB, Michigan: Burgess is an ideal Cover 2 linebacker with both speed and coverage skills. Burgess should be an immediate improvement to the Buccaneers defense.

61 Baltimore: Brandon Siler, OLB, Florida: The third Florida linebacker to be drafted this round and the fifth Gator overall, Siler should add a solid presence on the outside for the Ravens if they are unable to attain Adalius Thomas.

62 San Diego: Steve Breaston, WR, Michigan: Breaston’s agility and speed should prove an asset to San Diego’s new head coach a year from now.

63 New England: Dan Bazuin, OLB, Central Michigan: Bazuin has the athletic skills to play OLB in the NFL, and should be a good addition to New England’s linebacking corps.

64 Chicago: Dallas Baker, WR, Florida: Baker rounds out the second round of the draft as a new WR prospect for the Bears, who need more talent at the position.

Tony Hunt would be a perfect fit for the Eagles. I think late 2d rd, 3rd rd is where Hunt is going to go. The thing is that the Eagles may lose their 3rd rd pikc if thye sign Stallworth before FA begins. However, if they resign him after FA starts, they only lose a 4th rd pick.

We will see what happens with this. If they retain their third-rounder, it would probably be smarter for the Eagles to trade down or draft a wide receiver in the 2nd. However, if they resign Stallworth, Hunt is the obvious choice.

Nah, I don't expect to see the Eagles draft a WR at all, even if Stallworth is gone. THat just tells me they expect Baskett & Avant to step up.

If the Browns draft Brady Quinn I will cease to be a Browns fan. Although I'm also not thrilled about who they're actually expected to take, Alan Branch.

Seriously? You would leave. Common. Okay you're probably joking. The Browns should draft another running back to take the load off Frye. The don't need one in the top five, but a speed back. The Steelers used Willie Parker in a similar way.

No, I'm not joking. I hate Brady Quinn and the Browns have screwed up enough draft picks. I'm very much on the fence as a Browns fan right now. Quinn would push me over the edge. Actually, I might just stop watching the NFL period.

I don't like Quinn either. He showed nothing against either good defense he faced: Michigan and LSU. This doesn't bode well for his NFL future. I know you can't like Branch as an Ohio State fan, but he is an extremely fast penetrating defensive tackle and, though likely a little overrated, would be a great find for any team. If I was you, I would pray that they trade down with some team that wants Calvin Johnson (San Francisco?). At #11, Lynch is still available if you want that option, as are great 3-4 defensive pickups Paul Pozluszny, Adam Carriker, Patrick Willis, and LaMarr Woodley. Personally, I'd take a defensive player and wait on the RB, as there are plenty of options in the later rounds there.

Also, I talked to Ted Ginn the other night (two nights before his decision) and he had a cast going almost to his knee. He said it's a sprained foot. I think it's odd to have that big of a cast going that high for a sprained foot. That combined with a mediocre season (compared to his expectations) might take him out of the top twenty at least.

He would really have to suck at the Combine for Minnesota to pass him over twice. So no, he wouldn't. Green Bay would have to trade up to get him if they wanted him in the 2nd.

I love what Green Bay did in the draft last year. The got a bunch of draft picks. Instead of drafting an O-lineman in the top ten, they drafted three O-lineman in the 2nd to 5th round. All three started. You can find gems in the other rounds too. That is why if I am a GM for say the Lions, Cardinals, and Browns who aren't one player, I trade the top pick for a lower number one and 1 or 2 other picks. away

The pats don't need a FS. They have Artrell Hawkins who can last another season with Wilson as a backup. If they draft Safety it will be a SS, not a FS. The Patriots can probably sign either Danniel Graham or Asante Sammuel. If I was Belichik, I'd trade Watson for a draft pick and move up a spot with that extra draft pick, then resign both of them. Keep in mind they could franchise the other that they couldn't resign. Pats go LB with their first pick. They don't have any other pressing need that will be a good pick that late in the draft. Next, the only way your draft order makes sense is if you have the Bears over the Pats in the Super Bowl. Is this right, or am I missing something? If the Vikes draft Jerret and Smith, sign me up for the bandwagon because they will have enough talent to do things with.

I could definitely see the Pats going for a FS. Hawkins has not performed well during this playoff season and Eugene has not performed up to expectations. We could allowed Eugene to play at free safety and corner during training camp, and the winner of the training camp battle would stick. Eugene could move to corner and Nelson could sit on the bench. As for linebackers, there is no one available for good value at pick #24 or pick #31. As for the draft order, I am using the 100% objective order from Great Blue North Draft Report, as always, for my draft order, and New England is ranked #31 as far as strength of schedule and playoff ranking. I would personally put New England at #32 and move the Saints down to #31 instead of the Bears.

I think your Jets picks are way off. I don't see how they don't grab a DLineman or even 2 or 3, in the first 2 rounds. Not only is DT and DE the Jets 2 biggest needs, but Mangini is going to build this team like the Patriots and the Patriots have a DLine of all 1st rd draft picks. This will be a defensive draft for the Jets. You will see 2 DLineman, a LB and a CB taken and I would not be surprised if the Jets went into next season with Kevan Barlow and Leon Washington as their RBs.

That is an excellent point. Adam Carriker has fallen down to the Jets most of the time, but Pittsburgh took him at #15 instead. There don't really seem to be any other good fits, other than perhaps Turk McBride as a late 2nd round to 3rd round prospect. If you know of any other good 3-4 defensive lineman prospects, let me know, because they seem quite lacking in this draft.
