The Contract Corner (March 22, 2007)

This is the first installment of a new series I hope to keep up called The Contract Corner. I will be consolidating all sorts of contract news from the major sports in one easy-to-follow place. Here we go with the inaugural edition!

Atlanta Braves lock up McCann

Brian McCann, the best young catcher in the National League, signed a six-year deal to remain with the Atlanta Braves today. Thanks to Bball3345 for providing the financial details, which are 6 years for $26.8 million, including a club option for 2013.

Contract talks on hold between Morneau, Minnesota

Talks on a long term contract extension between reigning AL MVP Justin Morneau and the small-market Minnesota Twins have been put on ice for the time being. The Twins had offered Morneau deal reportedly worth between $30 and $35 million dollars over four years, with an option for a fifth year available. Morneau is currently under a one-year contract with the Twins for $4.5 million, avoiding arbitration.

The drama surrounding Alex Rodriguez's option to opt-out of his monster $252 million dollar contract and become a free agent at the end of the season has been one of the biggest storylines this spring. New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that although they would love to have A-Rod return to the Bronx next year and for the forseeable future, they would not be offering him a contract extension. Rodriguez says that he wants to return to New York and finish his career there, but that it is ultimately up to the city whether he stays or goes.

Schaub signs long-term deal with Texans

Three-year veteran, popular Mike Vick-backup, and brand new Houston Texan Matt Schaub has reportedly signed a six-year deal worth $48 million dollars with his new team, which includes $7 million in guarantees. The size of his contract and the draft picks the Texans gave up to get him probably spells a ticket out of Dodge for former #1 overall pick David Carr and a spot as the starter for Schaub.

Whatever the Braves decide to give McCann, he's worth it.

The McCann move by the Braves is a great move. In a sport where there are few good catchers, and even fewer good young catchers, McCann is one of them. Now, I only wish that he was a Phillie instead of a Brave.

And I'm thinking, if only Utley was a Brave...

The McCann deal is 6 years at a total of $26.8 million... He is being paid like a bench player, while being one of the top five or ten most valuable commodities in the league. Unless McCann gets hurt and misses multiple seasons of this deal, the Braves got themselves a monster bargain.

Or they move him to first base to make room for Saltalamacchia.

I think Saltalamacchia will probably get traded before they move McCann to first, but we'll see.

Two words: 48 million. He might be good eventually, but is he really that good?

Why thank you! I was looking for something semi-regular that I could do, and it seems like I already report a lot of things like this anyway.

No chance the Braves trade Salty. He might be the guy to move and McCann stays behind the plate, but no way he goes anywhere.

Remember Andy Marte and Wilson Betemit? They were can't-miss guys who weren't headed anywhere either.

I do think Saltalamacchia would move before McCann would. Salty is a little bit taller, so he would probably go to first base and McCann would stay at catcher.

There is no reason the Yankees should extend his contract. If $25 million a year is not enough for A-Rod he needs to find another team that will. Everyone knows his signing with the Rangers was because they were only team willing to pay that much for him. It wasn't like he wanted to be a Texas Ranger but when they showed him the money nothing else mattered.

Well, the reason would be the opt-out that he has at the end of this season, and then the provision that says that he can void the contract after the 2008 season if he doesn't get a raise to over $30 million or something to that effect. Avoiding that situation would be the impetus behind giving him an extension.
