This is the first installment of a new series I hope to keep up called The Contract Corner. I will be consolidating all sorts of contract news from the major sports in one easy-to-follow place. Here we go with the inaugural edition!
Atlanta Braves lock up McCann
Brian McCann, the best young catcher in the National League, signed a six-year deal to remain with the Atlanta Braves today. Thanks to Bball3345 for providing the financial details, which are 6 years for $26.8 million, including a club option for 2013.
Contract talks on hold between Morneau, Minnesota
Talks on a long term contract extension between reigning AL MVP Justin Morneau and the small-market Minnesota Twins have been put on ice for the time being. The Twins had offered Morneau deal reportedly worth between $30 and $35 million dollars over four years, with an option for a fifth year available. Morneau is currently under a one-year contract with the Twins for $4.5 million, avoiding arbitration.
The drama surrounding Alex Rodriguez's option to opt-out of his monster $252 million dollar contract and become a free agent at the end of the season has been one of the biggest storylines this spring. New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that although they would love to have A-Rod return to the Bronx next year and for the forseeable future, they would not be offering him a contract extension. Rodriguez says that he wants to return to New York and finish his career there, but that it is ultimately up to the city whether he stays or goes.
Schaub signs long-term deal with Texans
Three-year veteran, popular Mike Vick-backup, and brand new Houston Texan Matt Schaub has reportedly signed a six-year deal worth $48 million dollars with his new team, which includes $7 million in guarantees. The size of his contract and the draft picks the Texans gave up to get him probably spells a ticket out of Dodge for former #1 overall pick David Carr and a spot as the starter for Schaub.
