Steve Bartman

Steve Bartman is infamously remembered as the Chicago Cubs fan who reached for a ball he thought was foul in the top of the 8th inning of Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS against the Florida Marlins. His interference prevented Moises Alou from having a chance at making the catch, thereby retiring the batter, Luis Castillo. Bartman was vilified in Chicago after the incident, and remains so today in the opinions of many Cubs fans.

  • The Cubs were leading the series 3-2 and were leading that game 3-0 (5 defensive outs away from their first World Series since 1945) at the time of the incident.
  • Cubs pitcher Mark Prior was tossing a 3-hit shutout at the time.
  • The Marlins went on to score 8 more runs and eventually won the game 8-3.
  • The Marlins went on to beat Cubs starter Kerry Wood in Game 7 to advance to the 2003 World Series where they beat the New York Yankees 4-2.
