Sports Rant

As a sports fan, I watch any and every sports show that is gonna give me all the inside information, the scoops, the buzz, etc. going on about my team.  As a writer, I'm obligated to give my opinion on the subject matter.  I go on these rants so please bear with me while I rant about the topics of the past weekend.

First and foremost, I want to address the New England Patriots filming the Jets scandal.  For those that don't know, a New England employee was escorted out of the Meadowlands because he was caught filming the Jets' defensive coaches in hopes to record the signs they use in their defense.  People, this is an issue that isn't really important.  Well, it's become important.  According to Michael Smith, who received word from Chris Mortensen, Roger Goodell is going to act swiftly and harshly with the punishment.  The punishment could involve New England losing several draft picks and one can include the first day.  According to Smith, he also said this isn't the first incident.  Another incident similar to this involved the same situation except they were at Lambeau Field.  My question:  why?  Why would a Super Bowl caliber team risk this type of heat when you are a contender?  Better yet, why film the Jets?  You're better off filming Indy.  No offense to the Jets fans because I like Chad and Mangini but be serious.  If you're gonna film someone, film someone that will benefit you.  New England has won the AFC East Division since 2003 with a win back in '01.  You are slated to win again by a landslide this year.  Why would you risk your reputation AND draft picks to film some inconsequential ball club that doesn't pose a threat to you?!?  Someone please answer me that.

Serena, I need you to have more class than that you showed after your straight set loss against Justine Henin last Tuesday.  You lost a good fight.  She outplayed you.  There's no reason to be a sore-headed bear.  Did you see Andy Roddick act a fool after his umteenth lost to Roger Federer and Roddick played his ass off.  Federer was just a better player.  He's faster, more versatile, and his reaction time is much quicker.  The man makes adjustments quicker than the defense can audible.  He's the one who I expect to act out of his character because you can only take so much losing to the same person over and over again.  You and Henin go back and forth.  She won this one.  Move on and have some dignity for gosh's sakes.

A-Rod hit 5 HRs in a row in the last series the Yankees had with Kansas City and Seattle.  He leads the AL in Home Runs (52) and RBIs (140).  People are already starting to talk MVP.  Yet, Magglio Ordonez leads the league in batting average.  As a Yankee fan, I will say this...no way.  I've seen A-Rod play and while his at bats are exceptional, his field of play is not.  I played third base and half the ground balls that come towards him he misses or doesn't even attempt to field.  The others, he actually recorded errors because he didn't have the hang of throwing to the first baseman?  How long have you been a 3rd baseman?  You moved to NY when the Rangers couldn't afford to keep you and you chose to move to third to let your best friend keep his spot.  That was 2003.  It's 2007 and you are making rookie mistakes.  Nope, not this year.  Try again next year.

The offensive pass interference call in the fourth quarter of the Baltimore-Cincinati game was atrocious.  Referees are taking too many liberties with their penalty calling.  Clearly, Todd Heap was trying to keep the HOLDING defender at bay to catch the pass Kyle Boller threw at him in the end zone.  Yet, whistle blows.  Offensive Pass Interference.  Come on...  I don't know if Billick challenged it or not but he should have.  Hell,  I would have.  Not to mention that Texas A&M's game with Fresno State would have been shorter if the stupid WAC officials would have seen the fumble the FIRST time.  During the first OT, Freson has the ball.  Play Action to the WR and he fumbles the ball while in bounds trying to cross the ball over the plane and WAC officials took forever to finally call it a fumble.  Oh but wait, there's more...there was a roughing the passer on A&M's defense they decided to enforce since they were overturning Fresno's call that wasn't even in the original play.  Is Play Review really worth it?  In some cases, yes if you're on the receiving end of it.

Jamarcus Russell doesn't deserve to play a down of football.  I think Top 10 pick rookies are a little swollen in the head.  Why is the #1 draft pick finally in pads for practice?  Well, because he decided that 6 years for a total of $68 Million dollars was worth dressing up for.  People that would sign for 1 million dollars would have been in camp ready for preseason and yet, here you have a rookie that hasn't played a down of professional ball sitting the preseason out.  Greedy.  I don't condone Alex Smith getting the $29 million dollar signing bonus he got.  I don't wish injury on anybody but the way he sat this one out for big money, sprain an ankle.

Brady Quinn is mediocre but he's the best the Browns have.  Yet, Crennel doesn't want to start him until the Week 7 game.  Reason:  The first 6 games the Browns play are against 4 of the top 10 defense in the NFL.  How do you have faith in Quinn but you don't have faith in Quinn?  In order for this man to learn his position, he needs to be able to stand up and rise.  Tom Brady played through growing pains.  Yes, I know Brady was a 3rd rounder but that hasn't stopped him for recording 3 Super Bowl rings.  Let the other Brady play. The showing the Browns made on Sunday was horrible at the QB position.  Yet, you refuse to let your hope sit on the bench.  Is something wrong here or is it just me?

I think a rookie standard salary based on draft position would be a good idea for the NFL. Perhaps a salary cap for rookies like they can only make $1M for the first season max. Really, do you need more than $1M/year? I could retire if someone gave me $1M, and that would last my lifetime.

Agreed, it seems to be working in the NHL. This also makes the rooks proove themselves for a couple years before they can cash in.

Tom Brady was a 6th rounder, and he broke in with a good team after spendi9ng a couple years on the bench watching and holding a clipboard. Brady Quinn, on the other hand, plays on a horrible team with a revamped offensive line that may or may not be improved. We don't know whether the offensive line is that bad or the Steelers defense that good until the Browns play a couple more games. Bottom line, the two situations are not comparable at all. I still say give Quinn the full Carson Palmer treatment and write off the season. As for the rookie salary cap - in no other sport is the risk of life and career-threatening injury so great as the NFL, as we were reminded this week in the Kevin Everett situation. I don't see why people grudge these guys their money. I guarantee you every player in the Raiders locker room understands it's all business. They've had to negotiate with Al Davis.

I don't see the benefit of keeping Quinn on the bench. At least Palmer got to watch Kitna who was at a minimum mediocre but what is this kin gonna learn from Frye or Anderson. The Browns are completely disfuctional the only way Quinn is going is by playing. Watching those other two QB's will be like watching an episone of "What Not to Do" all season long.

And Brady only spent a few games on the bench

Brady spent the entire 2000 season on the bench, getting in 1 game, where he completed 1 pass out of 3 attempts. Tom Brady did not come in and start his rookie year.

Brady also had 2 training camps... And the pats aren't what many would have called great when brady came in...they were a good team...and they had a lot of lucky breaks. Certainly not the team they are today...

Regarding Billick challenging the offensive pass interference penalty, first, an officiating call like that cannot be challenged. Also, if it took place in the final two minutes, only the booth can initiate a review at that point. Quinn will start soon enough, and take a beating. Frye was just dealt to Seattle, Ken Dorsey was resigned and is expected to probably start this week's game, as no one was impressed by Derek Anderson's relief appearance last week.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but why ask why? If the Pats cheated, the why isn't important. They either did it or they didn't. Are you really saying: if there is no good reason why the Pats would film an inferior team, then there's no way they did something so stupid?

No that isn't what I was saying. Go back and read what I said. It was pretty straight forward.

Then the first part of my response applies -- it doesn't matter why.

By the way, a coach cannot challenge pass interference. It was a bad call, but Billick could not challenge it by rule.

How exactly did Andy Roddick "act a fool"? He was gracious in his press conference after losing (unlike Serena Williams) and he applauded the audience when he left the court. Roddick has always been a class act.

I think you misunderstood. The author was contrasting Roddick's classy behavior with Serena's lack of such.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything but did you read where I said that Andy Roddick didn't act the fool but is within his rights because he keeps losing to the same person. I said he handles it with dignity just as Serena should have... I thought I said that.
