Slugger? Yes. Attention Seeker? Probably Not.

Hey, you!! You're not paying attention to me!
Hey, you!! You're not paying attention to me!

As if Manny Ramirez wasn’t unpredictable enough, now he’s so unpredictable, we can’t even predict his unpredictability. What?

By making a spectacle out of his simple arrival to camp, which wasn’t even noticeably late, Manny is right back into his comfort zone: the driver’s seat of the Boston sports media. It seems as if the only way to keep Manny happy is by keeping the spotlight on him. Or is it? Is it that Manny loves the spotlight, or does he just draw it in by being himself? Does it even matter?

This past week or so, we’ve seen all kinds of people making a big deal out of Manny saying he wouldn’t be in camp until March 1, then we were hit with the car show fiasco (which Manny ended up not attending, nor did he apparently have any knowledge of). Every step he takes draws attention from all over the nation because everyone wants to see what he’s going to do next.

And they should. Everything this guy does just goes against the norm in every way possible. Nothing can be easy. Nothing can be smooth. Nothing can be taken for granted, even something as simple as showing up for training camp.

We’ve seen guys like this before, but with them it always seemed as if they did the things they did for the glory of people talking about them (read: Dennis Rodman). Manny is constantly playing by his own rules and it doesn’t seem to alter his behavior at all, no matter what is said about him. It really appears as though Manny doesn’t seek the attention, but rather it just comes to him.

He’s never done anything wrong. He’s not a wife beater, he’s never had drug or alcohol problems, he doesn’t use corked bats. Then again, he doesn’t do an obscene amount of charity work, he doesn’t make big donations to homeless foundations, and he hasn’t cured cancer. However, Manny still manages to be the most talked about baseball player for off-the-field actions this side of San Francisco.

Manny has a lot of baggage the Red Sox have to deal with. It can’t be easy working with a guy who wants to jump ship at the drop of a dime, then revokes it every time, does whatever he pleases in and out of work, can’t do half of his job (fielding) without giving everyone around him a heart attack, and makes a hell of a lot more bank than you can imagine. Ever wonder why Terry Francona shaves his head bald? Tito doesn’t want anyone to see the gray hairs he gets from being Manny’s boss.

But the most amazing part is, we have no evidence to show Manny even understands the enormous consequences of every move he makes and every breath he takes. If his attention span and concentration levels out in left field are any indications of his attitude toward life, chances are he doesn’t.

If he were on any other team (other than the Yankees), the money, combined with this baggage, would be unbearable. I don’t see how any small market team would be able to keep up with Manny, but because it’s the Red Sox, who grow money trees in little shops on Storrow Drive, it’s all worth it for 40 homers, 125 RBI, .320 BA, the sweetest swing in baseball, and the occasional awkward diving catch in front of the Green Monster that makes everyone cringe and wonder how this guy became a professional ballplayer.

Sure, the media circus will always follow him along with the rest of his quirks, but as long as that swing stays intact and in Boston, Manny always has a home in the middle of the lineup and in the hearts of Sox fans everywhere.

Manny's a pretty simple guy, pretty much as simple as a star athlete can come. I didn't really realize it until reading Terry Pluto's latest book about the Indians (the name escapes me at the moment), but all Manny really knows (and wants) is baseball. All the other stuff (the money, publicity, etc) is driven by his agent.

I think this is the best synopsis of the "Manny being Manny" phenomena I've read.

As an Arm Chair sports agent, that's what I'd advise Manny. I don't see how it would get any better for him on any other team.

The best description of Manny I've ever heard is as a sort of "slugging savant." I agree with your synopsis wholeheartedly. Personally, I love the guy. I don't mind the antics, I definitely mind the spectacle that the Boston media makes out of him, I think he's actually a better fielder than everyone thinks (especially at Fenway), and frankly, I wouldn't want to see him in any other uniform.

I've often wondered why Manny's considered a "nightmare" in the field. He's certainly not Griffey Jr. in his prime, however he's hardly a nightmare. I think it's because Manny made a leap against the fence one time, when the ball landed about 10 feet in front of him, and he's never lived that down since.

Manny Ramirez led ALL MLB outfielders in assists in 2005. Put that in your back pocket for when you need to win an easy bet.

Sure it's because of the Monster and the fact that everyone tries running on him... but stats are stats!

"hitting savant" is more poetic...

Yes, I agree, Manny is a much better fielder than he's given credit for. He looks horrible out there, but he comes down with almost every catch and he can play balls off the Monster very well.

I don't know, I have seen him make plays that were laughable. Watching balls fall to the ground, completely mis-reading flyballs, letting balls roll right past him, diving when he should have let up so the ball doesn't get behind him. You're right, I think he better than some of the media give him credit for, but I have also found him very comical in the outfield.

Manny is known for showing up at 9am for a night game to do his video work and do some lifting, then takes off and shows up just before BP. People who don't know just assume he's a slacker who shows up at the last minute. I'm not out to defend the guy because he is half a quart short of a gallon but at the same time he probably gets alot of crap he shouldn't. And Manny is quite possibly the worst outfielder ever. He is just awful. He blows plays my five year old could make easily.

Of 19 left fielders, Manny ranked 8th last year in FPCT, indicating he's slightly above average. I think when Manny makes a mistake, his mistakes are monumental, or just look stupid or comical. This, combined with his easy going demeanor and reputation, I think account for a bum rap about his fielding.

He ranks middle of the road in fielding percentage, but close to the bottom in chances. Its much easier to wait til the ball stops rolling and pick it up then to try and catch it.

Speaking of total chances, he consistently does poorly in range factor, although some of that is also the Monstah. As a Sox fan, I can admit that he's an abominable fielder: his instincts are awful, he gets terrible breaks, and he doesn't really judge balls well. But where better to hide him than in left at Fenway?

Manny at middle of the pack or less is a far way off from "Manny is the worst" outfielder in MLB... Oh, wait we're talking about Ramirez, not Stiles!

Pick your poison... put Ramirez at DH and put Ortiz at first???? Eeek!

Holy desecration of leather, Bat-men!! Giving ramirez/Ortiz a glove is the same as throwing away a good side of beef. Sure you got to slaughter the bovine, but why?

I'm surprised PETA doesn't protest at Fenway!
