Born on September 17, 1899 in Ansted, West Virginia, Sheriff Blake (John Frederick Blake) played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Browns over the course of his 10 year career. Blake broke into the bigs on June 29, 1920 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and put up a 4.57 ERA in 106.1 innings pitched in 1924, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Sheriff Blake's best season was 1928, when he posted a 2.47 ERA, won 17 games and struck out 78 batters.
