Scout Who Discovered Pujols Now Works at Walmart

12
Vote

Dave Karaff used to be a baseball scout for the St. Louis Cardinals. He used to nomadically roam the United States looking for undisovered baseball talent. Today, Karaff stocks grocery shelves at a Wal-Mart in Hot Springs Village, Ark.

Why? Because the St. Louis Cardinals dismissed him as an area scout three years ago.

So, why are we talking about Karaff? Because he signed Albert Pujols. Karaff, a former baseball coach at Hickman Hills High School filed the reports on Pujols, a hulking shortstop at Fort Osage High School in Independence and Maple Woods Community College, and signed him in 1999 after St. Louis took him in the 13th round of the June draft.

"I felt he was going to be successful, but I didn't know how successful," Karaff said. "I don't think there's any way we could have seen all these things." Incredibly, Karaff had one reservation about Pujols. "My one fear was whether he was going to hit, if you can believe that," Karaff said. "If we all felt he could hit consistently, he would have been a first rounder and got his $3 million bonus.

"He still does some of the things that I feared, but he has the ability to make adjustments, and that's something I never saw. When you watch him, when he's going bad, he's out on that front foot . . . He was a power guy, he had great hands, great arm. I felt he could play third base."

That's a crime. This guy obviously had an eye for talent. Maybe not that much though since he wasn't sure he could hit. What else could he have liked?

Of course he's working at Walmart, from reading this article it sounds like the guy almsot dimissed him. Hell, he waited till the 13th round to draft him.

What who gave me a negative score? You can't be serious? The 13th round of the ametuer draft is like the 25th round of a fantasy draft. You close your eyes throw at the dart board and hope you strike gold. Rarely does it happen but in this case it did, does that mean the scout is good? I don't think so, it means he got lucky. You can't tell me this guy actually planned to take Pujols in the 13th round like it was his secret weapon. He scouted him, liked his potential but was frightend off by inconsistency. 13th round came along and he was still there so he said what the hell.

Exactly. Frankly, anybody could be a scout and turn up ONE really great talent. The odds are against it, but you or I could do it once. The good scout is the guy who does it again and again, and/or can train others to find talent. One discovery of gold doesn't make you a millionaire.

well said Enybo. As I mentioned above, if this scout was consistantly finding top talent he would not be working the register at Walmart.

Xinoph, you have to admit that the chances of anyone picking a potential all-time great player in the 13th round is remote. This scout absolutely struck Gold. He did his job well as no other scounts seemed to pick up on the potential of Pujols.

I didn't say that it was likely to happen, but it is possible. Picking one good guy doesn't make you a good scout.
