Russ Finsterwald (Russell Weihr Finsterwald) was born on August 12, 1896 in Athens, Ohio. After going to high school at Athens (OH), Finsterwald attended Ohio University and Syracuse University. Finsterwald made his professional debut in the APFA in 1920 with the Detroit Heralds. He played for the Detroit Heralds for his entire 1 year career.
