Robert Geathers Should Be Suspended for the Season, If not more

With 4:52 left in the 3rd quarter Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Robert Geathers launched himself, full force, into a sliding, defensless Trent Green. It was a nasty collision which throttled Green's neck back in dramatic fashion until it smashed against the turf. Amazingly, there was no penalty called on the play (those refs should not be allowed to ref another game all season). It was an astonishingly dirty, illegal and disgusting play on the part of Geathers, and Green is lucky that he was not more seriously injured.

The NFL should take immediate action. The QB slide rule was specifically created to protect QBs from cheap shots when they surrendered themselves. I have honestly never seen a more disturbingly illegal hit in all my years watching the NFL. If the NFL does not take immediate and serious action against Geathers, it is clear to me that a death on the field is not too far off in the future. Players are too big, too fast and too strong to let them deliver full force blows to the head against defenseless players.

One final thought. If I were Herm Edwards I would have been going ballistic that no penatly had been called on the play. I would have interfered with the play of the game as much as I could and I would have then directed one of my defensive lineman to hit Carson Palmer on the Bengals next offensive play, regardless of what that play was. I would have my player jump up and down on his neck a few times while he was down and then finish it off my stepping directly on his surgically repaired knee. More realistically, I would have told my defensive players to continue to dive at Palmer's knees until serious damage had been inflicted.

First off, would you like some cheese with your whine? That hit was legal. If you watched the replay Geathers had left his feet before Green started his slide, thus no penalty. You also make a lot of sense as to why it would have been right to go after Palmers knee, step on his neck and blah blah blah. Hmm...torn ACL/MCL or concusion...thats a fair trade off you think?

No, I don't think it is a fair trade off. Green could have been killed. A torn ACL/MCL merely requires surgery and hurts mobility. Last time I checked, boxers don't become punch drunk because of torn ACLs. WRs don't suffer from Post-Concussion syndrome because of torn ACLs. People don't typicall die from torn ACLs. Now, blunt trauma to the head on the other hand...

Killed? Come on, this happens atleast once a year. Green will be fine. You sitting here saying if you were Herm Edwards you would have called for a retaliation. Thats rediculous. The hit looked far worse than it actually was. He'll be out 2-3 weeks, and will be fine. If Palmer were to have had his knee messed up again by a retaliation, it could end his career.

This isn't playing into either side, but I do disagree with "this happens atleast once a year". If by "this" you mean QBs getting knocked around, sure. But "this" was a pretty serious head-whip to the turf. You're going to have to give an example of "at least once a year" that looks this bad.

Estebistic, by this I meant a QB going into a slide and a defender hitting him anyway. It happened in the Lions game on Matt Hasselbeck. It wasn't as violent, but it still happens more often than people realize.

I neither have Trent Green on my fantasy roster nor do I have any love for Herm Edwards or the Chiefs. There is no way that hit was legal. Green was well into his slide when Geathers shot put himself into a defenseless Green. It was barbaric even by NFL standards and should be punished severly.

Tony Gonzalez said he thought it was legal. Heard the quote during Mike and Mike this morning.

I thought it was a bad hit until I took a closer look. Watch the play carefully. Geathers is actually pushed into Green by KC WR Eddie Kennison: http://www.y...=tU5gp-KJvMY

it was a freek play, not intentional... if green's head doesn't snap back like that, nothing ever gets mentioned again. Dude was trying to pull out of the hit. Simply a case of physics. Elastic collision with one object having more mass... in other words... OUCH!

You're completely wrong, AF. Look at the second angle. He was not pushed. You can see he clearly has the intention to hit Green. Look at the second angle.

Ahh, I thought I was logged in. Oh well. I thought it was bad until someone pointed out this to me. Then I watched it. Geathers won't be suspended.

I don't believe that Kennison caused the hit. Watching the video in regular speed Geathers launched himself at Green.

I agree. Kinnison having his hands on the defender isn't the same thing as pushig him into Green. Kinnison's contact with the defender appeared to be minimal. No way a receiver launches a big defender like that with so little contact.

Eddie Kennison pushed him! How should he even be suspended for a game?

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. Why are there three articles on Armchair about this one incident, all promoted by the same people? I'm not validating this one with a response.

If the NFL suspended every player who intentially (or in this case, unintentially) made an illegal hit, the NFL season would be a 7-man field goal contest because a few kickers would be all that's left.

On another note, that whole rant at the end about attacking Palmer completly took away any credibility to your argument. Apparently illegal hits are ok when you say they are.

That's very excessive. I think he should be fined, and maybe suspended for a game (for that matter, so should the ref who was five feet away from the play and didn't throw a flag). But, to suspend a guy an entire season for a mistake that's not all that uncommon in the NFL is really excessive.

I totally agree with this article. The hit was dirty, and it borders on the insane that a penalty was not called. I think he should be suspended until Green is ready to start again. That would stop this from happening.

I think the hit was dirty as well. Was he pushed (no, isnt that a block in the back), secondly. if your going to tackle someone running who has not yet started his slide, why do you end up hitting him near his shoes (had trent not slide)... the hit was dirty, someone got really hurt.

What a bunch of puds. The hit wasn't dirty. He was running for extra yardage, and as he slid geathers was already getting ready to nail him. It's football. Palmer got hurt alot worse last year but you have to deal with it. If anything the hit Kimo put on Carson was alot later than the one delivered to Green while running for extra yards. At least Green was beyond the line of scrimmage and had the ball in his hand. Palmer had neither when he got drilled so stop crying like a bunch of pansies. Its even worse that you would want someone totally unrelated to the hit to get hurt seriously. Palmer is a stand up guy and does many great things for the city of Cincinnati and the NFL. Why would you want him to get hurt. I wouldn't wish that on any player, even teams I hate, like your pansy Chiefs. Hit wasn't dirty, neither was the hit on Carson, and this is coming from a Bengal fan. Your lucky your team isn't in the AFC North or you would be crying about the physicality of the game every week. Go watch tennis or something.
