2006:
Murphy originally joined the Lions as a free agent prior to training camp in 2006 and quickly staked a claim to the left tackle position. By mid-season, Murphy’s unforgiving and relentless style of play not to mention his reputation preceded him on the team’s trips east of the Rockies. By season’s end he required both wrist and knee surgery to repair the damage inflicted by opposing d-linemen. Murphy’s dominating play could not be denied as he anchored the Lions offensive line from his left tackle position and earned the CFL Most Outstanding Lineman award as well as a West Division and CFL All-Star nod.
Spent time with four different NFL clubs, including Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, and Detroit Lions. Saw action in 26 NFL games including 15 with the 49ers in the 2004 season. Has attended training camp in Kansas City, Cincinnati and San Francisco. Also played for Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe in 2000 where he was a regular starter at guard and spent a brief time with Chicago Enforcers of the XFL in 2000.
College:
Spent three seasons with the Buckeyes and was a starter throughout his college career. Was named First-Team All-American as a junior.
Personal:
Rob and wife Amy make their off-season home in Florida where they are heavily involved in a very successful real estate development business. Rob is a big Metallica fan and has been backstage at a number of the heavy metal band’s shows. Rob’s noted sense of humour runs in the family as his brother is a successful stand-up comedian in Chicago. Rob was a college teammate and roommate of Lions defensive lineman Brent Johnson. Before attending college, Rob was also a defenseman on his high school hockey team and established a state record for penalty minutes in a season.
