Remember Portis?

A few months back, Clinton Portis was asked by a local reporter about Michael Vick and the dogfighting allegations. At the time, he laughed it off and told the reporter the feds should stay out of Vick's business. Portis himself said he had witnessed dogfighting many times, and didn't think it was a big deal. His teammate giggled Chris Samuels in the background, either in surprise or discomfort.
Two things are important. One, Portis didn't seem to take the allegations seriously. To me, that says Portis didn't think dogfighting is a serious crime. Two, Portis said he had seen dogfighting many times back home. To me, that says dogfighting is much more common than people think.
At the time, not too many people took his comments to heart. They just figured it was Portis being Portis, with his ridiculous outfits and alter-egos. Later, it was reported that it was unlikely Vick would be indicted. Portis' comments seemed to make sense, that the feds shouldn't be involved and there wasn't enough evidence to indict Vick for being directly involved; after all, he simply owned the property where investigators searched, he didn't live there.
In a way, VIck's indictment could be a blessing for the PETAs, ASPCAs and dog lovers of the world. It is a shame than it takes a federal indictment to put such a disgusting practice in the spotlight, but hopefully it will heighten exposure and force authorities to investigate dogfighting rings at a national level. Roger Goodell and the NFL have an opportunity to really enfore a zero-tolerance policy, by showing not even one of the league's biggest stars can be exempt.
