[edit] Biography

Raymell "Ray" Rice (born January 22, 1987) from New Rochelle, New York is an running back for Rutgers University.

[edit] High school career

Rice was the primary running back in high school, playing alongside current Rutgers teammates Courtney Greene and Glen Lee. As he got older Rice gradually took the job over. In his junior season he led New Rochelle High School to a New York state championship, and he took the team to the finals his senior year. In that year, Rice rushed for 1494 all purpose yards and 28 TD.

Rice was a very a highly regarded recruit coming out of high school where he was rated the 19th best all-purpose back in the country by Rivals.com. Not only as a football star, but Rice was also a standout on New Rochelle's basketball team. As the starting point guard he led his team to the state finals in 2003 and 2004.

[edit] College Career

Ray Rice is currently a senior at Rutgers University. Rice led the resurgence of Rutgers football as a freshman in 2004, its first winning season in 14 years, leading the team to its second bowl game ever. In 2006, the Scarlet Knights won a school record-tying 11 games and registered the school's highest ever season-ending national poll ranking, finishing at #12 in both the Associated Press and Coaches Polls.

As just a freshman, Rice was the Scarlet Knights main tailback. Rice rushed for 1120 yards and 5 TDs during his freshman campaign, including a 217-yard performance against the UConn Huskies.

Rice gained 1,794 rushing yards in 2006 with 20 touchdowns. His total in 2006 set Rutgers' single-season rushing yardage record, shattering J. J. Jennings' mark of 1,353 set in 1973. Rice's backfield partner his freshman and sophomore seasons was fullback Brian Leonard. Leonard considered entering the NFL Draft in 2006 but stayed for his senior year and took on a less prominent role in the offense which aided Rice's rise to stardom. Also, Rice finished seventh in the Heisman voting and a finalist for the Maxwell award. He was named a record 3 times the Big East Conferance player of the week. Each game he rushed for 200 plus yards.

Rice ended his sophomore season with 170 yards on 24 carries with 1 touchdown during the inaugural Texas Bowl to give Rutgers its first bowl victory ever in a 37-10 win. He was named MVP of the game.

Rice is widely considered a candidate for both the Maxwell and Heisman awards in 2007. One of the reasons why Rice is considered as a candidate for the Heisman awards were for his stellar playing last season. The many Ray Rice highlights from the 2006 season contributed to his popularity today.

Rice ended his junior year with a remarkable 280 yards on 35 carries, including 4 touchdowns (one from 90 yards), in Rutgers' 52-30 drubbing of Ball State University in the International Bowl. Rice's 280 yard game is the 3rd most all time rushing yardage in a bowl game.

On January 7th, Rice declared himself eligible for the 2008 NFL Draft.
