Raiders Sign No. 1 Pick JaMarcus Russell

by Brendan.Canney

The former LSU quarterback has finally ended his lengthy holdout and signed a 6 year deal worth up to $68 million dollars with the Oakland Raiders. Almost half of the contract is guaranteed ($31-32 million dollars). Last year's number 1 pick Mario Williams only received $21 million guaranteed from the Houston Texans, then again, he was a defensive end and not a franchise quartberback. Not since Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Bryant McKinnie in 2002, has there been a holdout this long. As far as top overall picks go you would have to go back to when Bo Jackson refused to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1986.

Russell could see the practice as soon as Wednesday barring any problems during his physical. Russell's lengthy holdout while economically beneficial, was not very beneficial in terms of actually playing a down in his first season in the NFL. As of right now the Oakland Raiders are planning to start Josh McCown and have former Miami Dolphins/Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper backing him up. Had Russell not held out for as long as he did he probably would have been competing for the starting quarterback role. And considering his competition at quarterback would have been a journeyman and a washed up veteran, I would've liked his chances.

Am I the only one who thinks Russell hurt his chances of ever developing into a good NFL starter by holding out for that guaranteed money. He missed valuable time with the coaching staff and much needed reps in training camp. Maybe he's good enough to overcome the late start, but he certainly set himself back. I envisioned him taking over early and going through some growing pains this year, setting himself up for a strong start next year. I can't envision that happening now.

Russell is the 16th QB taken with the first overall selection in the draft since 1970, and about half of those guys didn't prove to be worthy of the pick: Steve Bartkowski, Vinny Testaverde, Jeff George, Tim Couch, David Carr... Michael Vick was a question mark even before his career-ending legal troubles, and the jury is still out on Eli Manning and Alex Smith.

Jim Plunkett was a bust with the Pats but did win two Super Bowls with the Raiders, so I'd count him as one of the QBs worthy of the pick. Bledsoe could go in either column, I suppose, but he and Vinny sort of balance each other out. Bradshaw, Elway, Aikman, Peyton Manning, and Palmer are clear cut success stories.

I think he may have hurt his chances. The only thing that may aid him here is the fact that he's coming into the situation as a backup now. Daunte Culpepper could prove to be a strong mentor for Russell, and his presence could allow JaMarcus to ease into the starting role.

I agree with you. Training camp would have been beneficial to him and he would have gotten some reps with the first unit. Now he'll have limited time because the team still needs to prepare with McCown or Culpepper at QB. I hope it works out for him, but I have my doubts.

Vinny was a damn good QB. He just played for a hapless team.

You're right about Vinny, and in fairness that was a pretty weak draft class. I was on the fence about which group to put him and Bledsoe in, so I figured I'd put one one each side. Testaverde was much better than all of the other "busts," but clearly not in the same class as guys like Manning and Elway.

Its not going to effect him in the long run. It may take him longer to become "good", but he didn't get worse by holding out. Plus, at the rate he could get hit back there, he better get all the guarenteed money he can while he can.

This is HUGE news. Now the Raiders are only 51 players away from having a championship team.

I think he shouldn't play a down of ball at all this season. You are a rookie who hasn't played a down of pro ball and you want to hold out for all this money that if you end up not being good the fans will have to play due to escalated ticket prices and high concessions. You need the preseason to get acclimated to the faster pace and here you are at home waiting on the money. Hell, rookies don't deserve that much money. Give it to the people that have earned theirs. $68 million dollars for what? You haven't done anything. I've seen a better QB with Michael Vick coming out of school than Russell.
