Rafael Jose Betancourt is a relief pitcher with the Cleveland Indians. He was originally signed by the Boston Red Sox as an outfielder, and converted to a pitcher. He spent all of the 2002 season recovering from elbow surgery, and signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Indians in 2003.
Betancourt is known for his strange wind-up. He constantly taps his front foot before coming set with runner(s) on-base. Some people believe that this is technically a balk, while others say that it is not because he stops tapping his foot before coming set. He will then move his hands around and tug on his cap before finally making his pitch. A Betancourt appearance will dramatically slow down the pace of a game.
Betancourt has a metal plate and six screws in his pitching elbow.
On July 8, 2005, Betancourt was suspended for ten days for steroid use [1].
