Prediction for the Carolina Panthers' 2007-2008 Season

by user NCNative704

After finishing with an average record of 8-8, missing the playoffs, the Carolina Panthers are looking to head back into the playoffs to try and take the Super Bowl crown. Their history will prove that they don't have that hard of a time while playing in the post-season. The 7-3 record will show you that. Team history is good, but drafting is an even bigger deal. The Panthers had a great draft, amongst the 5th best in the NFL. After trading their 14th pick to the New York Jets for the Jets' 1st and 2nd round picks. Carolina would draft Jon Beason, a linebacker out of Miami University for their 1st pick, filling in a much-needed gap in the linebacker position. Then in the 2nd round, the Panthers would draft wide-out Dwayne Jarrett from USC, a much similar player to the later waived and retired Keyshawn Johnson, as far as playing style and build. The two rookies should be major contributors to the Panthers, both having high probabilities of playing time. But just like every NFL team, and other sports teams, they still have their positives and negatives.

Positives: The biggest positive on the Carolina Panthers would have to be their receiving squad. Steve Smith, one of the most dominant players in the NFL today, is a huge part of the Panthers. But looking past Smith, you have other good players as well. Dwayne Jarrett will be a good possesion receiver, most likely starting as the 2nd receiver. Another rising name is Drew Carter. He has blazing speed, great footwork, and can stay healthy for a whole season. The only thing holding this great receiver back is his catching abilities. If it wasn't for that, he'd be the 6'4 version of Steve Smith. Another positive would deffinantly be at the QB position. A great move Carolina made by picking up the unproven David Carr, who has been suffering blow after blow behind the Houston O-line for 5 agonizing seasons. He should be a great "Plan B" if Jake Delhomme starts to fall into a slump or gets injured. And for a fun fact, David Carr has been sacked a total of 249 times after 5 years with the Houston Texans.

Negatives: The main negative that sticks out for the Panthers in their running game. DeShaun Foster is just a disaster waiting to happen going up the middle after braking his leg against the Chicago Bears in the 2005-06 playoffs. But, DeAngelo Williams isn't the worst guy to back up Foster. He is inexperienced, but once he gets his confidence up, he will dominate with his speed. For now though, he is not the guy they need back there. Another negative that is stinging the Panthers is the linebacker position. Even though they've signed a good linebacker in Jon Beason, most of the linebackers are not that healthy, and may struggle to stay healthy. Dan Morgan and Thomas Davis will have to stay healthy for the Panthers to have a good year.

My Prediction: 11-5 (4-2 division): Even though the Saints had a Cinderella season last year, they will not, or barely, make the playoffs due to their below average defense. The Falcons may get an 8-8 record at the most. But the Buccaneers will be nowhere close to a winning record. 4 wins at the most for them.

The 11-5 prediction doesn't reflect how ineffective the Panthers' running game was last year and how little they did to address it in the off-season. Squeezed by a miniscule amount of cap space, they're going to be hard pressed to upgrade that, or any other position.....

Basically, if Carr gets the starting job this season, the Panthers push hard in the playoffs. If Delhomme keeps the job, no playoffs. I think it's just that simple.

Delhomme is a playoff caliber QB. So what if he had a bad season last year? It happens to the best.

The panthers are a complete engima...no suprises if they go 11-5 or 5-11...I think a lot of people like the saints, but they don't have such a soft schedule anymore...I'd bet closer to 10-6 or 9-7 for the panthers personally...and if they go 10-6, they'll see some january games...

Did you ever notice that Steve Smith wasn't doing so well until Jake delhomme came around and what happened immediatley after Jake came in, in the 2003 season opener against Jacksonville in the 3rd Quarter? huh? We came back from a 23-0 deficit. A 24-0 run to win and go all the way to the Super Bowl. Yeah there are some up and downs on People. Tom Brady didn't do so good in 2002.8-8.so u have to cut jake some slack people, or your not true panther fans. And for all of u that thought that weinke was better, than you must be blind and stupid. Jake is going to have a phonomenal season atleast 25 TD passes, 3 rushing, and over 2500 yards! And INT. below 15.were going deep into the playoffs, no matter what record we have. And i have confidence that we can go all the way this year. And Steve Smith will Be on the COVER of Madden 2009. And the MVP of the NFL. Sorry chad but Smitty is goin' all the way. At the end of the year Every panther player will have a Super Bowl Ring.

11-5 for the Panthers? With that QB? With a coach who is on the verge of getting fired? Wow, this must be early July. That, or you been snipping at that moonshine again. Carolina is a .500 team at best. Nothing better than that.

I can't say that I am impressed with the Panthers draft. I don't think Beason will be an impact linebackers, and Jarret lacks the speed needed to be an NFL WR. The big question with the Panthers is how quickly it will take them to make Carr their QB. The sooner he is named the starting QB, the better off the Panthers will be.

We'll find out if Beason can play: Dan Morgan will get hurt again. And Jarret as the Number 2 receiver will be the same player he replaced: Keyshawn Johnson. He'll move the sticks on 3rd and 7 and make the tough catches over the middle.

Pretty astute right there...Morgan cannot be relied upon....he's one of the better MLBs when healthy, but that isn't very often and Jarrett is a chain moving WR...i would have kept keyshawn personally (oyou know what you're getting w/ him), but I think they had cap problems, so it made sense for the future... You can rarely depend on a rookie WR though...they're a total crapshoot int he draft...

I really doubt that Fox will get fired. He's one of the main reasons why this franchise turned around in 2003. He's 44-36 in his career, 5-2 in the playoffs, leading the Panthers to the Super Bowl in his 2nd year being the coach. Would they really fire him? But yes, there is a question mark at QB until pre-season.

With Carolina, it is the odd years that matter, for whatever reason; at least recently. 2002: suck; 2003: go to SB; 2004: suck; 2005: go to NFC Championship game; 2006: suck; 2007, in a still-weak conference?? Who knows? The Panthers making the playoffs and going far into them would be no more surprising than any other NFC squad doing the same.

I can't believe so many panther fans have confidence in David Carr. I hopes he starts the 2nd game of the season aainst the Texans. Don't believe the majority of those sacks was the o-line fault. Texans Fan

You're right. His receivers were not getting open either. You can never blame a QB for a sack, unless he has bad vision or scrambles, which doesn't describe Carr at all.

I don't know about 11-5... it's definitely a possibility, but I think .500 is a better bet. I think I have the division at Saints, Panthers, Bucs, Falcons. The Bucs may surprise this year... I think around .500 is a very reasonable projection for them. Garcia is perfect for Gruden and Petitgout helps the O-Line. Additionally, Cadillac will probably go over 1,000 yards and be a threat again this year. With a QB and a better line, teams won't be able to put 8 and 9 in the box against him this year.

Also... Jarrett might not be quick enough to emerge, and you're right that Drew Carter is good, but needs to improve his hands. I think that Beason will likely be a great contributor this year, but I think that their best pickup in the draft was Ryan Kalil, C, USC. He has a chance to start for the next decade. Additionally, I think Charles Johnson could develop into a starter opposite Peppers. Maybe not this year, but they'll likely at least work him into the rotation.

Great post!

to a lot of people saying jarrett is not quick enough to play wr,take it from a old coach, that coached 15 years, jarrett has game speed.you know keyshawn wasn't fast either,an he was a good nfl wr.people stop knocking jarrett,he'll be alright.

jarret lacking speed? what was jerry rice's 40 coming into the league. Aside from that, his height and atheticism will help him in making catches; especially if delhomme sticks to throwing high like he did in the past. As far as the odd years...nice observation but totally coincidental.

Cmon you guys this is the point. Delhomme is better than Weinke by a mile, and Carr is too battered up to be a good QB. What Carolina needs is a good back-up QB, a good Running back (like another Ladanian Tomlinson), and a good WR like Keyshawn Johnson. With this team, we can win the Superbowl!
