Predicting Ryan Grant: The Week 9 Start/Sit Mailbag

by Flea.Fanatics

Back in early October, Ben from Ann Arbor, MI was going through a tough time, having lost Deuce McAllister and Carnell Williams in his dynasty league. Bewildered and upset, he turned to the Shimmering T. for guidance. Being in a deep dynasty league, he asked for the names of some players that might help him out now or in the future with almost every player and their backup already snatched up in his league. Who did the Shimmering T recommend? Read on: “As far as potential future stars that aren't owned in most leagues, I would go with Ryan Grant on the Packers if he is available. From what I've read, they really like him.” THAT is why you write in to the mailbag and THAT is why I am the Shimmering One. On to the mailbag…

Frequent Questioner and All Around Good Guy, Corey, asks:

Sit/Start:

K. Keith vs. Selvin Young

I’m thinking Young since Keith is playing the team sent from God. Thanks, Corey

Hey Corey,

I would go with Selvin Young, too, because the matchup against Detroit is a good one. Henry is a little banged up and has his court hearing soon, meaning Shanahan will have to see what he has in Young. I also question how much the Colts will utilize Keith because I don't think he earned anyone's trust last week when he lost a fumble, even though the call was reversed. Would you trust him in the biggest regular season game of the decade? I also think the Colts recognize how valuable a blitz-blocker Addai is. I don't expect much from either guy, but Young would be my choice.

Good luck this weekend,

-Shimmering T.

Start/Sit:

1) Losman v Clemens v Rosenfels. This week and then for rest of season 2)Chambers v Galloway v Marshall v Evans Pick 3 3) K Watson v Echemandu 4) Echemandu-what do you expect out of him from here on out? 5) Do you think M Robinson will go for Gore this week and if he does well does that become RBBC? 6) Do you think J Russell will give it a go soon? Does he have Fantasy value if he does? 7) Roy Williams v K Curtis 8) Roy Williams v J Galloway 9) Whats up with R Williams not doing so well and Kitna not throwing TD's like crazy. K Jones changing Martz's playbook that much?

One last thing, I have to start thinking about playoffs and I'm looking for suggestions. I know Cle has best match-ups toward end. Would you consider article on looking ahead for playoffs? Thanks for your time. Big Fan,

Justin

Hey Justin,

Here we go:

1) Losman - I like Losman's matchup a lot this week. The Bengals are just about the best defense to go up against each week and they don't have a match in the secondary for Lee Evans. 2) Chambers, Marshall, and Evans - As I mention above, I really like Evans this week and as a second-half stud. Chambers has a great matchup against the Vikings pass defense and should score a TD. Marshall also has a great matchup and with Javon Walker still on the sidelines, he is the main guy in Denver. 3) I go with Watson because even if Johnson plays, he won't get too many carries. Echemandu is the popular pick, but he is a bit roughed up, and Ahman Green and Ron Dayne are also supposed to suit up on Sunday. The Bills run D is also a good matchup. 4) I think Echemandu is a one or two-week wonder. He’s a bit banged up as I mentioned before, and I don’t think the Texans spent so much money on Ahman Green to keep him on the bench when he can play. 5) I have been low on Gore all season long, since he was one of my picks for most disappointing this season. I think he will play this week, but don't expect him to do much if he does. Keep an eye on the major websites Sunday morning to find out whether he plays or not. If Gore can't run behind that O-line, then I don't see Robinson being able to either. 6) I think Russell will start playing once the Raiders are eliminated from the playoffs, but like most other rookie QBs he doesn't have much value except in dynasty leagues. 7) I would go with K Curtis this week, as the Broncos secondary will be playing with a little more emotion this week after getting whooped by Favre and Co. Plus, Curtis has a decent matchup against the Cowboys secondary. 8) J Galloway - I want to wait until Williams proves his value once again before going with him. Galloway has been pretty solid this year and should have a decent day against the Cardinals secondary. 9) I'm not sure what the deal with the Lions is, but I'd likely blame it on a combination of poor pass protection, poor decisions by Kitna, and quick feet in the pocket. The Lions have given up the most sacks this season, which normally doesn't bode well for the psychology of a QB. As for Williams, I'm not really sure what the deal is. He should be having a career year, but is clearly regressing. It will be interesting to see whether he can break out soon.

As for the playoffs, Cleveland does have great matchups, as do the Cardinals in their passing game. That's why I've been so high on Warner. That's a great idea for a column, too, and definitely one I should try to write soon. Thanks for the idea!

Best of luck this weekend,

-Shimmer”or do they really Glitter”ing T.

Jam, a new addition to the FleaFanatics club of awesomeness asks:

Hey Shimmering!

All my RBs are pretty much on their bye week except Addai and now I’m forced to pick up a back off the waivers. Who would you start: Ryan Grant, Chris Henry (backing up LenDale), or another back most likely to be on waivers (i.e. Justin Fargas, Echemandu, Norwood, F. Taylor, etc.)

I'm really looking for one of these guys to at least get me 8 pts. What do you think?

Thanks again for the help!

Jam

Hey Jam,

Thanks for your question. I also appreciate the qualifier (letting me know how many points you want), since it makes picking the player easier. That said, this is a tough one, since if you are looking for a solid 8 points you want a consistent player, and all your choices are fairly hit or miss. If I were you, I would pick up Fred Taylor, unless it means dropping someone of value. I have a good feeling about Taylor this week, especially with Quincy Gray at QB and the Jags running the hell out of the ball. I think he is your surest bet to get 8 points, if not more this week. If Taylor isn't an option, go with Grant against KC.

Best of luck this week and hope this helps lead your team to a W,

Shimmering T, What up dude? How are you doing? Again I'm in a QB bind. I've got 3 options: 1) Kitna vs. Denver 2) Pride of Venice HS "Just Punt" Losman vs. the lowly Cincy Bungles 3) Jason Campbell vs. Jets My gut says go with JP b/c he's got something to prove and the Bengals defense is awful.

Thanks, Tim Hey Tim,

I would go with Losman, although I don't think Campbell will do poorly against the Jets. I expect Lee Evans to have another huge day, since him a JP work well on the long bomb. Last year they connected for a few huge games in a span of a few weeks, and I think this is the 2007 version of it.

By the way, your Broncos are terrible.
