[edit] Biography

Philip Alan Plantier (Born January 27, 1969 in Manchester, New Hampshire) was a professional baseball player for the Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres, Houston Astros, Oakland Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals from 1990-1997.

He was an 11th Round Draft Pick (291st Overall) in 1987 while attending Cal State San Marcos.

Phil was a very popular prospect due to his New England roots, coming from the same state that produced Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk. He played a total of 175 games with the Red Sox, primarily in Left Field or as a Designated Hitter. Many little league players in New England imitated Plantier's batting stance, which looked like the batter was sitting in a chair.

Plantier's best year was in 1993 after joining the San Diego Padres. He had a .243 average with 34 home runs and collected 100 RBI in 138 games. The 1994 season saw Phil hit another 18 home runs in a strike-shortened 98 games.

Phil Plantier retired due to injury after playing 42 games with the Cardinals in 1997. He played in a total of 610 career Major League games.
