Patriots, Classless, Unsportsmanlike

by DisgruntledBob

I sat through a nationally televised Pats game to see if they really do run the score and try to embarass their opponents. The Redskins were exposed as a museum of overpaid underachievers by the Patriots. There will be consequences esspecially after Wes Welker's late touchdown where he spiked the football in jubilation when the game was in fact a blowout, by then.

Yep. Fourth quarter rolls around and the Pats are scoring with sheer desperation and all of them spiking the ball like they've won the Super Bowl. Statement! I think back and can't remember a team ever doing this. The Patriots play until the final second trying to run the score up on Washington. Wow!

How cool would it be if in Week 15 someone rips Brady's cute smirking head off when he's diving head first on 4th&2 in the 4th quarter when the score is 73-0? I bet you the league's players would smile and nod. That is what will happen. The classless Pats will lose one of those key players on a meaningless play but who better than their best player, their emblem Brady?

Once again Belichick dodges questions and players tow the company line during the post-game. If they were trying to be hated, the us against the world only for real, not just talk, they are succeeding. No one outside New England will celebrate their triumphs, unless they are transplants who fled the blizzards and nor'easters for warmer climes.

That was sad, what they did to the Redskins and you cannot make the argument that they did it because they could. Its like kicking someone who is down and saying you are doing it because you could. What happened to honor?

These cheating hissy-fit throwing pansies are more dangerously perhaps representing a changing culture in America? No. I won't go that far. Otherwise why would so many of us be repulsed by their unsporting behavior? They are just a reflection of their coach who being such a defensive genius since his Giants days has no room left in his brain for people skills. I read late Halberstam's book, The Education of a Coach. I am dissappointed how Belichick never apologized for cheating and dodged the questions and more so now that his team responds to their cheating the way that they are. I mean what was so hurtful? You cheated. Get over yourself. A simple apology would have been nice.

But when your ego and arrogance reaches such levels, not only do you not say, "I'm sorry, please let's move on," you forget that this is a sport and play 'I'll show them' football the rest of the season. I am now waiting for Brady to suffer a career altering, season-ending, playoff-killing injury because of his coach's inability to deal with criticism. I guess he still has nightmares with gray Cleveland skies and barking sounds.

While an unlikely scenario, one of the tie breakers the NFL uses is points scored. What happens if the Pats and Colts play a tie this week? They'll have the same division record, the same conference record. The first tie break for home field will be points scored.

The Chargers recovered a fumble on Houston's 8 yard line yesterday with 1:30 left, and took a knee three times and ran out the clock instead of trying to score. With three losses already, the Chargers have no shot at best record, if they had scored that would have constituted running up the score.

The Pat's scenario does not reflect running up the score.

I agree. If they're going to continue to send out Brady in 3 or 4 wide receiver sets, and you can't stop them, you might as well send the house and try to dirty Brady's uniform a little bit. The Patriots right now have a psychological edge over their opponents right now, but if Brady starts getting knocked around a little bit, they could lost that. You know what they say; if you can't beat them, beat them.

Thats what will happen. Doesn't matter if it is a late hit or not. At some point some defensive player will be pissed off and take a shot at his knees or head. Or maybe even it will be one of those accidents where Brady jams his thumb on his Olineman's helmet. My only hope is that it happens late enough in the season that it affects their playoff run.

I am not worried about being classy. All I am doing is explaining what happens when teams continually run up the score. I don't wish harm on anyone. I am just saying that you reap what you sow in this world. Guys get thrown out of games for tackling other guys because they dance on their logo, do you really think a defensive player won't take a shot at a Patriots after being embarrassed 53-6?

I'm sick of these jackasses ranting about the Patriots running up the score. This isn't the 40-and-over flag football league where they have the mercy rule. This is the highest stage in football and if opposing teams don't like what the Pats are doing, they need to get their fingers out of their ass and stop them. A Bill Belichick team is not going to stop playing for any reason other than the sound of a whistle, or the clock running out. They're not going to stop playing because eventually they're going to get in a situation where a game goes down to the wire and the team needs to know how to play right to the end. This is simply Belichick keeping his team sharp and on top of their games. Just because your team sucks doesn't mean you can come and call my team classless for trying to accomplish the objective of a game: to score points. That's called being a sore loser.

Ugh, this constant whining has become intolerable. You don't want the Patriots to "run up the score" on you? Well, here's a simple solution: STOP THEM FROM SCORING! I know, I know, it's easier to sit around crying about it like a bunch of facking babies, but last time I checked, you played the game until the final whistle. Crazy, right? To expect the Redskins' defensive players to, oh I don't know, do their jobs, even when they're down by nearly 50 points? These guys are professionals, no? And yet people are whining about how "classless" the Patriots are for picking on their "poor, defenseless opponents"... It's sickening. Remember when sports were about competition, about personal pride? If you don't have enough pride in yourself to fight your hardest until the end of the game (blowout or not), and if you expect favors from the opponent when you get beat, then what the hell are you doing on an NFL field in the first place?

What i do enjoy is that the only people here who seem to be getting pissed off about the article above...well...they're pats fans...(honestly, not a surprise...we all defend our teams)...

I don't think the 'chick is running up the score because he hates joe gibbs or eric Mangini (ok, maybe a little) or Wade Phillips (alright...maybe he hates wade phillips)...but between the cheating and the 'chick's unquenchable thirst to rub it in everyone's face (including a certain former coach, mentor and current ESPN analyst) as well as the who cheating scandal, and the fact that he does and will always have a chip on his shoulder...he does it...

My only issue legitmate issue with it is...what's the point...is brady really that desperate to be better than manning (TD record)...does BB not only want to have the 2nd undefeated team, but want to make the 1985 bears look like sissies...does he not only want to be better than the greatest show on turf (vikings or Rams...doesn't matter which) and an unstoppable defense...i'm just not sure what he's trying to prove...

I guess cosmically speaking he'll get his due...maybe its a brady injury or something freaky to take it all away...or more likely...its already happened...the albatross of "cheating" and what the 'chick perceives has disrespect and never being lombardi....

I really see it, as I said in my comment above, as Belichick just trying to keep his team sharp. He knows that eventually they're going to get in a close game and they're going to HAVE to actually play all 60 minutes. He wants to make sure his guys are ready for that and know that they can keep it going. I don't think Belichick is trying to prove anything because he doesn't care what people think of him. All he cares about is winning the game, and making sure his team is ready and prepared for every Sunday.

Running up the score against an obviously helpless opponent is classless. It does nothing (unless that opponent is Michigan, Miami-Florida or Florida) and brings more bad will than anything else. Coaches have memories like elephants. To even suggest that is setting a bad example. I watched some of the Texans-Chargers game and Houston did not look good at all. Then I switched over to the Pats-Redskins game and that game was looking more and more like a blowout with each second. Be careful what you wish for, as my grandfather would say.

The Pats fans are right, this is the NFL and you have to come to play every week. If you don't want them to score then stop them. But, that doesn't make what they are doing "classy". It is disrespectful and shows a lack of sportsmanship, but following what we discovered earlier this year do any of you expect any sort of sportsmanship from that organization. This is a team that got caught cheating and is now pissed off at the rest of the league for calling them cheaters. So here we are, the Patriots cheated and they have no sence of class or sportsmanship, but, the only way to stop them is to embarass them on the field.

Running up the score is different from intentionally injuring someone. You may want it to happen, but if it does you will feel like a big ol' piece of sh*t. If it happens the person who does it will be villified far worse than Belichick and the Pats and will probably get himself blacklisted thus ending his football career. Being too cut-throat is one thing, but intentionally injuring someone leaves no room for forgiveness. Some player may try it, and god help him if he succeeds. Yes, what goes around does come around, and when a team comes around that can beat the Pats 52-7, it'll be because Belichick, Brady, and Bruschi have long since retired.

Wow, I do like the comments. Hey thank you for agreeing/disagreeing with me. I still believe that the Pats are rubbing it in, and that will lead to some crazy 300 pound D-Lineman just pummeling Brady into the turf after some meaningless play. And I think it is Belichick's fault for that injury, and it will put these guys back in their place. You can't shit on people just because you are better than them- that is what they teach you as a kid when you take up sports. Of course, I understand why some New Englanders will defend their team, but c'mon, give me this much, you can still score 50 points without the spiking of the football celebration when its 73-0 and without going for it on 4th down in the 4th quarter.

Welker's was lame. But for Cassell, it's probably really exciting for him to be playing outside of the 4th quarter for the first time since High School in a normal game (i.e. not week 16 or 17). And again, even if it was running up the score, if you give up 2 Rushing TD's to one of the Slowest QB's in the league, and 2 more to backup QB's, you deserve to have the score run up on you.

Dancing on someone's grave is not my idea of a champion. Bunting late in a baseball game when you're way ahead, celebrating goals in a blow-out soccer or hockey game, these are things that have to do with the way the winning team handles itself, not because the sorry loser is having a bad day.

I don't know why some folks think it's "classy" to play your second stringers, and run the ball when a team has a commanding lead.

To me that shows the ultimate disrespect for their opponent, and the game itself. It's basically saying: "We think you're SOOOO pitiful, that we feel sorry for you".

And besides, Tom Brady is on a mission to smash all offensive records. It's nothing personal against the Skins, or Phins or any other team. For years he's had to hear Manning this, and Peyton that, all the while having 2nd class wide receivers - while Archie's boy had Harrison and Wayne.

Now he finally has the tools to put the "Which QB is the best" question to bed, with a season for the ages.

This Pats fan plans on enjoying it with awe.

Running up the score isn't why the Pats are classes. It's professional football. Players are being paid. Contracts are based on performance--on both sides of the ball. I don't have have a problem with scoring a lot of points.

The reason why the are classless is because of how they act.

I just watch Gaffney mock the Eagles' flap after a TD.

Sure the TD pulled the patriots ahead, but you're the favorites. You're the best team in the league right now. Mocking another team is classless, esp. when you're the favorite.
