Orator Shafer (George W. Shafer) was born on October , 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He made his Major League debut on May 23, 1874 for the New York Mutuals. In 1877, his rookie year, he hit .285 with 3 home runs and 34 RBI. Shafer played for the New York Mutuals, Hartford Dark Blues, Philadelphia White Stockings, Louisville Grays, Indianapolis Blues, Chicago White Stockings, Cleveland Spiders, Buffalo Bisons, St. Louis Maroons and Philadelphia Athletics over the course of his 13 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Orator Shafer's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1884, when he hit for a .360 average. However, others believe that it was 1890, when he stole 29 bases, hit for a .282 average and knocked in 58 runs.
