My Early Heisman List

12

by user The Beast

1. Brady Quinn (Notre Dame) Even as a dieheart USC fan, I understand that this guy will take home the Heisman. ND plays a weak schedule and America loves the Irish for some strange reason.

2. Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma)- Peterson will be better than Quinn, winning the Maxwell and Doak Walker Award, but everyone loves the Irish.

3. Troy Smith (Ohio State)- If Ohio State gets in the mix this guy could take home the Heisman.

4. Marshawn Lynch (California)- If the Bears can get a Quarterback, he might be the next Reggie Bush. Yes, I said it.

5. Dwayne Jarrett (USC)- The Nation's top receiver will explode if USC can get a real QB.

I'm a big Cal fan and I love Marshawn Lynch...but calling him the next Reggie Bush is quite a bold statement. I agree that they do need a legit QB...hopefully lots of recruits haven't labled Tedford as a QB-destroyer. (Akili Smith, Dave Carr, Harrington, Boller et al)

Oh Stop! Practice has yet to begin, and people are naming Heisman winners and Top 25 teams. STOP! This is what is wrong with Division I-A football. End the madness, bring us a PLAYOFF!

It's never to early to talk about NCAA football, just like it's never too early to talk about the NFL draft or the hto-stove baseball season. Now be quiet and listen to us rant.

I'd put Michael Hart, Ted Ginn, Michael Bush and Drew Stanton as dark-horse picks. I also happen to agree with Christof on the need for a playoffs. I hope someone eventually does a "showdown" about this topic, I think it would be quite interesting.

Replace Adrian Peterson with Jamaal Charles, and you got yourself a list.

Replace Vince Young with a good quarterback and maybe you could think about the possibility of bringing Charles' name into the discussion. Although, he does get to play the weak ass Big 12, so you never know.

lol...Charles needs the support of a good QB, but you like Peterson with BOMAR under center? Okay. And you'd better be careful what conference you're calling weak. The Big 12 is the conference of the defending national champions, and the conference that is coming off a good bowl season despite some very unfavorable matchups.

Peterson is a much bigger, stronger, and more complete back than Charles. Also, the Big 12 is weak. Nebraska has been down for a few years, Baylor stinks, A&M has stunk recently, Colorado hasn't been good, and both Kansas teams have been a joke the last two years. Outside of Oklahoma and Texas who has stood out?

Also, Texas' only games the won by less than 21 points were outside of the Big 12.

And those two games they won by fewer than 21 points - who were they against? Oh yeah, now I remember - the defending national champions USC and a BCS Bowl-game winning Ohio State team. And you're going to fault them for beating two top five teams by LESS than 21? lol!

Barely beating the Bucks doesn't prove that the Big 12 is strong. It proves the Texas was good enough to be National Champs. The debate was about the whole of the Big 12 and until they prove otherwise they are horrible. Texas plays a Big Ten team and wins by 3, they play a Big 12 team and win by 21 or more. See what I'm getting at.

Any my point is that the national champion dominating teams that are ranked outside of the top 5 is not indicative of a weak conference. If you take one team from each conference and look at their margins of victory in conference play versus non-conference play, you could find many ways to say every conference in college football is weak. USC, for example, had one loss (out of conference), and only one win where they didn't beat their opponent by double-digits. By your standard, that would make the Pac 10 weak. I understand the point you're TRYING to make, what I'm saying is I don't think it's valid. Especially when, as I said, the Big 12 had such a good bowl season. They were tied with the ACC for the best record in bowl games last year (5-3), despite many projections by the experts that only had them winning 2 or 3 bowl games.

Unless Quinn has a meltdown season, he has the Heisman locked-up. He is now in a pass-happy offense on the media-darling Irish. Look for 3,000 yards and 25+ TDs to win the heisman but not to win the National Championship. Also, everyone quit bitching about the playoffs. Can't you see that college football has a playoff system in disguise? It's called the regular season and it's basically a one-and-done format. Take Penn State last year, they went unscathed through the season, except for Michigan and landed in the Orange Bowl which is basically a glorified consolation game. The two teams that lose in the Final Four are swarmed by the media, and are congratulated on having great seasons, but they aren't champions. Hmmmm, that sounds surprisingly similar to how people talk to the non-Championship BCS bowl games. Stop asking for a playoff system because there are flaws with the playoff system, just like there are flaws with the NCAA regular season and bowl system. In playoffs, you get rewarded for playing just well enough throughout the year and getting hot towards the end, and in the NCAA + Bowl format, you get rewarded for playing well ALL season. People need to stop focusing on the 2004 Auburn's as the biggest crime in sport's history. What about the Colt's last year? They were much better than the Steelers throughout the season and all it got them was lousy home-field advantage. Whoopity-doo.

Well if you want to put it that way, the Colts should have won the Super Bowl this year, yes. Of course, that is not the way that things work. People criticize the "one-and-done" system that you described because it put too much emphasis on regular season play, not enough emphasis on "clutch" play, doesn't allow for an underdog team (i.e. Pats 2001) to win the national championship, and doesn't always allow for a decisive national champion (see Michigan/Nebraska debate in late 90s). This is why a playoff system works so much better; it gives teams like George Mason or the 2001 Patriots another chance. With the Top 25 system, a team not ranked has no hope of becoming national champions, which takes away from the excitement a little. The Super Bowl is such an important game because of the playoff climb that the teams made to get there. Perhaps you would prefer that the Super Bowl was more like the Rose Bowl so that the Colts could finally win one.

Quinn's #1 in almost every list I've seen, but pay attention to Florida's Chris Leak too. He got more preseason Heisman Hype last year, but this is his second year in Urban Meyer's offense and he has tons of playmakers around him.
