More improvement for Everett

As seen on my regular site... Juuust a Bit Outside :

Kevin Everett continues to progress in his rehabilitation from a catastrophic cervical spine injury sustained last Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium against the Broncos.

Everett watched part of the Buffalo 26-3 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday from his hospital room at Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital in Buffalo.

Bills doctor John Marzo reported on Everett's status Monday after Bills orthopedic surgeon Andrew Cappuccino conducted a thorough examination Sunday evening on Everett.

"Kevin Everett remains medically stable in the intensive care unit, and continues to make daily improvement in his neurological status," Bills doctor John Marzo said Monday in a statement released by the team.

Everett has improved markedly in recent days. It was said today that he has now shown movement in both hands and has greater strength in his leg muscles.

"Kevin demonstrated increased strength in the muscles of his legs," Marzo said. "In addition, he was able to show some movement in both hands."

It has also been said that Everett's doctors are now beginning to focus on rehabilitation for his neurological and muscular systems, which will take some time.

In a show of support from the Buffalo Bills fans, several fans have designed shirts to show their dedication to the club and their fallen tight end. One of them is showcased at http://www.cafepress.com/ke85 and was designed by Mike Galati after the conversation of showing solidarity and support for Everett at the Bills Monday night game against Dallas in early October.

Galati is selling the shirts at cost plus a two dollar donation to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (http://www.christopherreeve.org). The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy.

The Bills have released their own official shirt that they wore under their jerseys yesterday and can be found at http://www.buffalobillsproshop.com/main_detail.cfm?nProductID=13710&sAuxTitle=Exclusive%20Kevin%20Everett%20Tee as well.

I urge any and all fans, not just of the Bills, but of the NFL in general, to look at both of these and think about shelling out for one. It goes for a good cause, and shows a lot of support for this individual. I know that I plan on getting a pair in the near future, one each for myself and my wife.

Thanks to all for keeping Everett in their thoughts and prayers.

ESPN interviewed (who knew that could be possible these days?) the paramedics and a few of the physicians responsible for saving Everett's life and providing him an opportunity (not a guarantee) to be able to walk out of the hospital. It was good stuff and a reminder of what ESPN once routinely provided to the sports fan. Hang in there Kevin, we are all thinking of you!

If I'm not mistaken, that was on Outside the Lines, which is the top (only) quality program on ESPN these days.

Credit to the Bills medical staff for planning for this contingency ahead of time and knowing just what to do.

Not all stories have happy endings, but I hope this one does...

You are right Romie...not every story has the ending we want...but with the improvement that has been shown by Everett in the past week, things are looking increasingly positive for him as we move forward.

I can't help but think of the digitally enhanced commercial where Christopher Reeve got out of his wheelchair and walked. Hopefully, Everett can make this come true.

Things are moving along well enough that at some point down the road, that may come to fruition. We just have to take each hurdle as it appears.

The Buonicontis definitely are a major reason for the Miami Project and for the positive news on Everett to date. That's cool that you got to attend that MJD.

tell me that it's not weird that Bills owner Ralph Wilson was a major contributor to the Miami Project, that it was started by a graduate of the same college Everett attended (Miami U) and that the attending physician had just attended a seminar on the radical cooling technique they used on his spinal canal... Regardless of what happens with Everett, other people WILL benefit in the future from this.
