More McCarthyism Parnoia from a Pompous Windbag

by Tyrone Briggs

"But here is where baseball loses me and strikes out again. Former U.S. Senator George Mitchell, who has been heading Selig's investigation into the Steroids Era for much too long (would you believe April of 2006?), should have resigned as a director of the Boston Red Sox when he accepted the assignment. How could the commissioner allow someone leading a steroids probe to remain directly connected to the executive board of a major-league team? That is the most dangerous conflict of interest yet from Selig's office, which apparently will allow White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf to have an influential role in choosing who will own the competing, crosstown Cubs -- meaning a wealthy, young, popular candidate like Mark Cuban likely has no chance when he could do significant damage to the Sox's long-term future." - Jay Mariotti

Jay Mariotti is determined to be baseball's version of Joseph McCarthy.

It is of course no coincidence that Mariotti elects to rant and rave over the Mitchell investigation on the first day of baseball's Fall Classic. God forbid should baseball fans and the sport itself receive a momentary reprieve from the performance enhancement drug investigation to just relax and enjoy the Rockies and Red Sox play ball.

But alas, that is an impossibility to budding Senator Joseph McCar... Mary Otti and his campaign to destroy the evil doing steroid injecting players. And no different than rooting out those invisible Communist bastards that threatened America's freedom in the late 40s and 50s, all the stops must be pulled to save the integrity of the baseball, mom and apple pie.

Where exactly is J. Edgar Hoover when Mariotti needs him most?

And as always with the back page pundit, all roads of wrongdoings, whether imaginary or real, inevitably lead to White Sox owner and chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. Leave it to the coiffed bobble head to squeeze one more campaign plug on behalf of Mark Cuban to own the Chicago Cubs while presuming a Reinsdorf-led collusion against such a sale.

Not surprisingly, Jay now seems to allege expertise in the fine, noble practice of witch hunting and confesses his incredulous dismay over all aspects of the Mitchell investigation. Apparently, an inquiry that has endured for a year and a half is simply far too long for a rather impatient Senator McCar Otti to finally begin conducting public kangaroo court sessions. After all, why bother accumulating evidence and attempting to unearth the true facts surrounding the Paul Byrd controversy when a simple confession can be obtained under threat of burning at the stake?

For much of his 15 year reign of terror in the City of Broad Shoulders, Mariotti has brandished the label "cheap" upon Chicago's sports teams whenever it best self-served his egocentric needs, most notably the Chicago Tribune's ownership of the Cubs. And nobody ballyhooed over the $400 million payroll of the Cubs during this season more than Jay. If money should be no object for a local team owner to win a championship, than how can Selig be faulted for alluding to the baseball's financial windfall? Does the dwarf even comprehend how these players are paid?

Undoubtedly, it is Senator McCart Otti's wet dream to conduct baseball's steroid interrogations in a public arena no different than McCarthy's congressional hearings. Innocent until proven guilty be damned as the mission to save baseball presides over fundamental civil rights. And if a few innocent people get hurt in the process, so be it. After all, the ends justify the means?

Have you no shame Jay?

If I didn't know better I'd think Tryone was tying to get a paying gig doing Mariotti articles.

The world needs more Tyrone Brigsses!

Fack Mariotti! I never paid attention to him until this summer, now I just want him to suffer pain and agony as retribution for his hurtful, careless doings.

Maryotti isn't just a "joke", he is a bad joke - a punchline below the belt.

And WHAT is with his fishlips? He makes Willie McGee look pretty.
