[edit] Biography

Acquired

The Blue Bombers originally signed Stegall as a free agent in September 1995.

2007:

Set an all-time CFL record with his 138th career touchdown in Week 5 against Hamilton on a one-yard pass from Kevin Glenn. Tied all-time CFL record with his 137th career touchdown late in the fourth quarter against the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 1, forcing overtime. Stegall tied George Reed and Mike Pringle. Tom Pate Memorial Award recipient as chosen by the CFLPA for his outstanding sportsmanship and significant contribution to his team and to his community and Association. Ended the season seventh in the CFL in receiving yards with 1,108.

2006:

Stegall showed no signs of slowing down in his 12th season with the Blue Bombers. Despite being limited to 14 starts due to injuries, he still managed to lead the Blue & Gold in receiving with 79 catches for 1,269 yards and seven TDs. His 1,269 yards were fourth best in the CFL while his 79 receptions were third best in the league and helped earn him CFL and East Division All-Star honours. Stegall produced one of the most electrifying plays in team history on July 20 at Commonwealth Stadium when he hauled in a Kevin Glenn and scampered 100 yards to produce a last second, game-winning touchdown against the Edmonton Eskimos. Stegall was twice named the CFL Offensive Player of the Week. The first time came following a 10-catch, 254-yard yard performance versus the Esks in Week Six. He did it again following a Week Seven performance against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats that saw him haul in 11 catches for 162 yards.

2005

Like wine, Stegall continues to get better with age. Stegall showed in 2005 why he is still among the CFL’s preeminent pass catchers. The Turtle-Man snared 52 passes for 1,184 yards and 17 TDs. His 17 TD receptions were best in the CFL. Those 17 TD cathces helped him establish a new CFL record for career TD receptions with 129. His 22.8 average yards per reception was also tops in the league in ’05. Stegall had one of the best individual games ever for a Bomber receiver on Oct. 10 at Canad Inns Stadium against the visiting B.C. Lions. He hauled in four passes for 234 yards and a phenomenal four TDs. The performance earned him CFL Player of the Week honours for Week 16. He was also named a CFL West Division All-Star for the sixth time in his career and was a CFLPA All-Star for the fifth time. He was the CJOB Bomber Player of the Game five times (Weeks 1, 4, 6, 10 and 11).

2004

Stegall played in 16 regular-season games. He became the club’s all-time receptions leader July 22 against the B.C. Lions with his 574th reception. He ended the season with a career total of 626 receptions. Stegall finished the season with 68 receptions for 1,121 yards and six touchdown. He had three 100-plus yard games. Stegall’s performance moved him into eighth spot in CFL career receiving yardage.

2003

Stegall appeared in 18 regular-season games for Winnipeg as well as the 2003 West Division semifinal. He led the CFL in touchdowns (15), receiving touchdowns (15) and non-kicker scoring (90). He also led the Blue Bombers in receptions (68) and receiving yards (1,144). From a league perspective, Stegall moved into fourth place in the CFL record books for career touchdowns (105) and took over second spot for receiving touchdowns (103). He also took over second spot in games with a receiving touchdown (73), sixth place for 1,000-yard receiving seasons (6) and sixth place for 100-yard receiving games (38).

2002

Stegall had one of the greatest individual seasons in CFL history. He led the CFL in receptions (106), receiving yards (1,896), yards from scrimmage (1,896), touchdowns (23), receiving touchdowns (23), 100-yard games (10), 100-yard receiving games (10), average yards per catch (17.9 – 50 min.) and non-kicker scoring (140).

The Turtle-Man also set two major CFL records in 2002. He set a new league single-season record for touchdowns with 23 and a new league single-season record for receiving touchdowns, also with 23. Stegall set personal highs in several categories: receptions, receiving yards, yards from scrimmage, touchdowns, receiving touchdowns, multiple touchdown games, 100-yard games, 100-yard receiving games and points scored. He set or tied 12 Winnipeg Football Club records in 2002.

Stegall capped off his tremendous year by winning the league’s Most Outstanding Player Award. His win was the eighth time a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers won the award in the history of the awards presentations. The Football Reporters of Canada named Stegall to its CFL All-Star Team for the fourth time in his career and for the third year in a row.

Stegall became the second straight Blue Bomber to capture the award, as quarterback Khari Jones won the honor in 2001. This was the third time a Blue Bomber player had won the award in back-to-back seasons. His win was also the eighth time a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers won the award in the history of the awards presentations.

The Football Reporters of Canada named Stegall to its CFL All-Star Team for the fourth time in his career and for the third year in a row. His selection to the CFLPA All-Star Team marked the fifth time that he had been named to that team. He was also a CFLPA All-Star Team member in 1997, 1999, 2000 & 2001.

2001

The 2001 CFL season was another legendary one for Stegall as he earned both CFL All-Star and CFLPA All-Star accolades.

Stegall achieved several milestones and put his name in the CFL record books once again. He also put a big dent into several Blue & Gold club records. Like the famed turtle of “the Tortoise and the Hare” fable, Turtle Man is slowly and steadily winning the race when it comes to achievements.

Though he was only in his seventh CFL campaign, Stegall was quickly rewriting the team’s record books. Five weeks after passing Perry Tuttle for fourth place on the Blue & Gold’s All-Time Receiving Yards list with 5,812 yards, Turtle Man vaulted over another great in the same category.

With a five-yard catch at the 10:54 mark of the fourth quarter of Winnipeg’s mid-August game against the Toronto Argonauts, Stegall moved into third place on the club’s all-time receiving yards list. He passed Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame member Rick House, who finished with 6,286 receiving yards in nine years with the Bombers. Stegall stood at 6,290 yards and counting following that game (Winnipeg vs. Toronto, Aug. 10, 2001).

As if his receiving yards accomplishment wasn’t enough, Stegall added another laurel to his weighty football crown that game, as his four-yard catch on the second play of the fourth quarter was also a historic one.

The catch – Stegall’s fourth of the contest – gave him 338 for his career, pushing him past 12-year veteran Ernie Pitts into fourth place on the football club’s all-time receptions list. Pitts had 337 in his illustrious Hall of Fame career. That same game, Stegall put his name in the CFL record book again by going six-straight games with a receiving touchdown, which tied him with 10 others for the fourth longest receiving TD streak in CFL history.

Not surprisingly, Stegall set the Blue Bomber record of eight consecutive games with a receiving touchdown in 1997 (Weeks 6-13) – a mark that is the second best in CFL history. Former Stampeders great Terry Evanshen holds the CFL record of 10 straight games, set in the 1967 and 1968 seasons.

Stegall’s storied career gained more momentum in a September game against the Tiger-Cats (Winnipeg vs. Hamilton, Sept. 8, 2001). He totaled his 62nd career touchdown in just his 81st regular-season game. That most recent score – a 79-yard pass-and-run hookup with quarterback Brian Ah Yat – tied Stegall with Canadian Football Hall of Fame member and former Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ great James Murphy for third place in the club’s all-time touchdowns scored list.

Stegall moved another notch up the touchdown ladder with a score against B.C. (Winnipeg vs. British Columbia, Sept. 28, 2001). In the game – his 84th CFL contest – he notched his 63rd career score when quarterback Khari Jones lobbed an eight-yard pass to him in the back of the end zone. The touchdown tied Stegall with Canadian Football Hall of Fame member Gerry James.

The all-star slotback posted another fine performance against the Edmonton Eskimos (Winnipeg @ Edmonton, Oct. 5, 2001). He grabbed eight catches for 130 yards and one touchdown. The 100-yard game was Stegall’s fourth of the season. More importantly, it was the 25th 100-yard receiving game of his seven-year CFL career.

The 130-yard performance pushed Stegall over 1,000 receiving yards for the season, which marked the fourth time in seven seasons he had accomplished the feat.

A week after tying Gerry James for second place on the Blue Bombers’ all-time touchdowns list, Stegall surpassed the Canadian Football Hall of Fame member by scoring yet another major. Stegall recorded his 64th career score when he grabbed a Jones pass from 11 yards out in the third quarter.

The three touchdowns equaled his career high for touchdowns in a single-game set the year before (Winnipeg vs. Saskatchewan, Sept. 29, 2000). The three receiving touchdowns were the most in a game by a Big Blue receiver in 2001.

As outstanding as his career had been to that point, Stegall had never caught as many passes in a single season as he did in 2001. Stegall – who set a personal best of 78 catches in 2000 – eclipsed his career high in that Hamilton contest by notching his 80th reception of the season. Proving he gets better with time, Stegall had set a career best for receptions for the third-straight season.

With his 80-catch total, Stegall established the 9th-highest single-season reception total in Blue Bombers’ History. Stegall surpassed the 79 catches in a year set by Mike Holmes in 1980 and Gerald Wilcox in 1993 to take over 9th spot.

Though he made only one catch for 18 yards a week later in Vancouver, Stegall reached a meaningful personal milestone by surpassing 7,000 career receiving yards (Winnipeg @ British Columbia, Oct. 20, 2001).

Stegall missed the final two regular-season games taking care of a tender knee. Still, he finished the 2001 regular-season with four Top 5 league placings. His 14 receiving touchdowns led the CFL, while his 14 total touchdowns were 2nd in that category. The 81 pass receptions he hauled in were 2nd best in the league with his 1,214 receiving yards were 5th.

At the close of the 2001 regular season, Stegall had totaled 404 career points –6th best in club history.

Stegall wasn’t content to rest on his regular-season laurels in the post-season. He had a thrilling 70-yard touchdown catch against Hamilton in the East Division Final (Winnipeg vs. Hamilton, Nov. 18, 2001).

Then in the 89th Grey Cup (Winnipeg vs. Calgary @ Montreal, Nov. 25, 2001, Stegall made one of the greatest touchdown catches in the history of the big game. Late in the 4th Quarter, Stegall went airborne between two Calgary defenders and came down with a score that put Winnipeg within five points.

He finished the championship game with seven receptions for 118 yards and the one touchdown.

2000

The 2000 season was another chapter in Stegall’s storybook career.

Appearing in 16 of Winnipeg’s 18 regular-season games, Stegall finished the year with 1,499 receiving yards – a total that was second best in the CFL. His 1,501 total yards were sixth best in league in yards from scrimmage.

His 15 receiving touchdowns led the CFL with the 15 scores placing him in third place in the league in total touchdowns. His 19.2 yards per catch average was second best in the league for players with 30 receptions or more. He had seven 100-yard receiving games in 2000, five of which were for 145 yards or better.

Stegall’s seven 100-yard games in 2000 tied his career best in that category, which he had previously in 1997. He has posted 21 100-yard games in his 71 regular-season appearances. He has only been shut out once in his CFL career: Winnipeg vs. Toronto, Sept. 9, 2000

Naturally, Stegall’s exceptional play led to his selection as Winnipeg’s Most Outstanding Player. Like the end zone, this honor was familiar territory for Stegall. He was also the team’s nominee in the category in 1997.

1999

Despite missing five games due to injury in 1999, Stegall still placed third in CFL receiving yardage with 1,193. He is a deep receiving threat that possesses breakaway speed and exceptional moves.

1998

Stegall played in just seven games but still managed to snag 32 passes for 403 yards and six TDs.

1997

In just his third CFL season Stegall established himself as an offensive force to be reckoned with. He caught 61 passes for a total of 1,616 yards and 14 touchdowns. His yards per catch average was a phenomenal 26.5 average – a CFL record that stands to this day. Stegall also showcased his special teams’ skills in the 1997 season. In Week 3 action against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Stegall blocked a Paul Osbaldiston punt attempt that resulted in a 32-yard blocked kick return touchdown for Kelsey Perrin (1st Quarter, Winnipeg @ Hamilton, July 11, 1997, Winnipeg 33, Hamilton 18).

That performance led to Stegall’s selection as a CFL and East Division All-Star, the first of many times to come he would be so honoured.

1996

Stegall dressed for 11 games his sophomore CFL season. He hauled in 34 catches for 613 yards and six TDs.

1995

Stegall came to Winnipeg in 1995, playing the last six games of the regular season. His performance was a harbinger of what was to come. He grabbed 25 passes for 469 yards and four TDs. He was a late cut of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers coming out of training camp.

1992-1994

Stegall spent three years with the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals. He played in 21 games from 1992-94, focusing mostly on kickoff returns.

College

Stegall was a three-year college starter at Miami (OH). He finished his college career with 106 receptions for 1,581 yards and was a three-time Mid-American All-Conference selection.

Personal

Stegall and his wife Darlene are the proud parents of son Chase Hamilton, and are expecting their second child. In the off-season, Stegall likes to dabble in the real estate market and owns property in Cincinnati, Ohio and Atlanta. He was voted the best looking man in the CFL.

  • Most people believe that 1992 was Milt Stegall's best NFL year, as he had 430 kick return yards.
