- The first running of the Indianapolis 500 took place. Ray Harroun won the race.

- The Supreme Court hands down a decision that is commonly misinterpretted by the public. Despite popular belief, the court said that baseball is a business more than it is a sport. But it is exempt from antitrust laws and interstate commerce rules because the produce does not cross state lines. A baseball game is played in one place at one time.

- Billy Joe Davidson signs a record bonus that is believed to be $120,000 with the Cleveland Indians. The pitcher never plays in the major leagues.

- Gus Bell hits three consecutive home runs and goes 5-5 to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs, 10-4.

- Buck O'Neil becomes a coach for the Chicago Cubs making him the first black coach in the major leagues
- Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew both hit a grand slam in the first inning for the Minnesota Twins as they go on to beat the Cleveland Indians, 14-3.

- Joe Niekro hits his only career home run off his brother Phil Niekro as the two pitchers face eachother in a game in which Joe and the Houston Astros beat Phil and the Atlanta Braves, 4-1.

- A.J. Foyt won the Indianapolis 500, it was his fourth time winning the race.

- Seven different Dodgers go deep, setting a team record as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds, 17-6.

- The Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox, 5-2, snapping LaMarr Hoyt's 14-game winning streak

- In Brussels, Belgium, at Heysel Stadium during the European Champions Cup Final a concrete retaining wall collapsed and 39 people were crushed or trampled to death. More than 400 people were injured. The match was won by Juventus one-nil over Liverpool. Following the disaster English clubs were banned from European competition for five years and Liverpool banned for six years.

- Rickey Henderson, playing for the Oakland A's steals his 893rd career base, passing Ty Cobb for first on the all-time list.

- Cal Ripken hits his 334th career home run passing Eddie Murray for first on the all-time Baltimore Orioles home run list.

- While visiting Yankee Stadium, Oakland A's second baseman, Randy Velarde completes just the 10th unassisted triple play in major league history.

- Roger Clemens strikes out 10 batters to become just the third major leaguer to strike out at least 10 batters in 100 games joining Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson

- Jason Bay went 1-5, snapping his six game consecutive homerun streak. He was the only Pittsburgh Pirates' starter to not have an RBI in a 14-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
- Ryan Howard hits a 3-run HR to lead his Philadelphia Phillies over the Washington Nationals, 11-2. It was Howard's 13th HR of the month and his 35th RBI.
