• The New York Yankees lose to the Washington Senators, 2-1 in the first night game ever played at Yankee Stadium

• Willie Mays hit his first career home run off of Boston Braves hurler, Warren Spahn. It was also his first career hit after starting the season 0 for his first 12. It was the first of 18 homers he'd hit off of Spahn, the most he'd hit off any pitcher.

• Dale Long of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a home run in his 8th consecutive game setting a major league record that would later be tied by Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr.

• The National League owners vote unanimously to allow the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants to move to the west coast. The two clubs are now in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

• Goals by Franz Roth and Gerd Muller lead Bayern Munich past Leeds United for the European Cup. The final was played at Parc des Princes, Paris. This was Bayern's second European Title.

• Ron LeFlore is held hitless in four at bats and his 30 game hitting streak is snapped. His Detroit Tigers lost to the New York Yankees, 9-5.

• Bobby Dews, the manager of the Durham Bulls throws a tantrum while arguing with the umpires. He throws second base into the stands, tears off his shirt, powders his underarms with a rosin bag, and then kicks the rosin bag.

• Cal Ripken goes 3-5 with 3 homers and 8 RBI. It was his first 3-homer game and the 8 RBI in a game was a career high for him. He helped the Baltimore Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners, 12-8.

• Defender Oleg Luzhny joined Arsenal from Dynamo Kiev.

• The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-3 thanks to an 11th inning RBI single by Marquis Grissom. The Diamondbacks team record 11 game home winning streak is snapped with the loss.

• Ken Caminiti and Lance Berkman both homer for the Houston Astros making it the 15th straight game that the Astros have a home run in, setting a team record.

• Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche announced his retirement from the NHL. He left his career as the NHL leader in victories (551) and games played (1,029). He was also the all-time leader in playoff victories, games played and shutouts.

• Mariano Rivera notches his 300th career save in the New York Yankees' 7-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He also becomes the first Yankee and 17th reliever in major league history to reach the milestone.

• Matt Clement becomes the 21st big league pitcher and the first Chicago Cubs pitcher in over a century to hit three batters in one inning, to tie a major league record. The victims plucked in the fifth inning of the first game of a doubleheader against Pittsburgh are Bobby Hill, Jason Kendall and Craig Wilson.

• The Boston Red Sox crush the New York Yankees, 17-1 in Yankee Stadium. The scoreboard goes blank in the 8th inning as the scoreboard operator can't keep up with Boston's barrage of hits and runs. The 27 hits one shy of the most hits allowed by the Yankees and one shy of the most hits ever had by the Red Sox. Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon each had four hits and Edgar Renteria had 5 RBI

• The Cincinnati Reds retire the number 10 in honor of Sparky Anderson, the manager of their "Big Red Machine" club in the '70s.

• Barry Bonds hit his 715th career home run off of Byung-Hyun Kim to pass Babe Ruth to take sole possession of second place on the all-time home run list.

• Edgar Renteria leads the way for the Atlanta Braves with a 4-6, 2 homer night in a 13-12, 11 inning victory over the Chicago Cubs. Adam LaRoche also homered twice for the Braves as they hit 8 in the game, setting a club record. The Cubs did not manage to homer.
