- Bill Bradley of the Clevelands Indians became the first American League player to homer in four consecutive games.

- New York Giants hurler, Christy Mathewson, took the loss in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds. It broke a streak of 24 consecutive victories for Mathewson over the Reds.

- The first major league game is played under the lights at Crosley Field where 20,000 fans saw the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1.

- The Boston Braves sign Paul Waner after he was released by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He joined his brother, Lloyd Waner on the Boston roster. He would play just a year and a half in Boston before making his way back to Brooklyn.

- Nat Clifton signed a contract with the New York Knicks to become the first black player in the NBA

- The New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers, 11-5 thanks to the help of Mickey Mantle who went 5-5 with an intentional walk.

- Seven different major league baseball teams get shutout in one day, setting a major league record.

- Tommy McCraw hit 3 home runs and drove in 8 as his Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins, 14-1.

- The Detroit Tigers win their 17th straight road game tying a major league mark set by the New York Giants in 1916

- The Montreal Canadiens won their 23rd Stanley Cup

- Al Unser Sr. won his fourth Indianapolis 500.

- A Power outage in Boston Garden in NHL's Stanley Cup finals caused the suspension of Game 4. The game was tied 3-3 at the time of the outage. Game 4 would eventually be replayed in Edmonton.

- Andre Dawson was walked intentionally five times in one game.
- The Edmonton Oilers won their fifth Stanley Cup defeating the Boston Bruins.

- Al Unser Jr. carries on the family tradition by winning his first Indianapolis 500. Unser edged Canadian Scott Goodyear by .043 seconds.

- The St. Louis Cardinals set a major league record by leaving 16 men on base as they are defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-0.
- Cal Ripken hit his 300th career home run. It was a 3-run shot off of Milwaukee Brewers' starter, Teddy Higuera

- Mark McGwire hit his 20th home run in his 35th game, setting a major league mark. It took him 6 fewer games than the previous record held by Mickey Mantle in 1956 and himself in 1998
- 16 Los Angeles Dodgers' players and 3 coaches are suspended for going into the stands at Wrigley Field in a game with the Chicago Cubs to fight the fans.

- Jon Lieber one hits the Cincinnati Reds to shut them out. It was the first time they were shut out in 208 games, setting a National League record. Only the New York Yankees (1931-1933) at 308 games and the Milwaukee Brewers (1978-1979) at 212 games have longer streaks.
