  • Joe Borden threw the first no-hitter in National League history

  • A National League record is set as New York and Pittsburgh combine to steal 17 bases in one game.

  • The Cleveland Indians score 9 runs with 2 outs in the 9th to beat the Washington Senators, 14-13

  • In a game his team would win 6-5, Dode Paskert of the Cincinnati Reds stole second, third, and home in the top of the 9th inning against the Boston Red Sox

  • Harry Greb defeated Gene Tunney, giving him the only loss of his pro boxing career. Tunney finished at 65-1-1.

  • Hack Wilson hit a home run off the Wrigley Field scoreboard becoming the first player to do so

  • The St. Louis Cardinals traded Mort Cooper to the Boston Braves in exchange for Red Barrett.

  • Joe DiMaggio hit a home run in 3 consecutive AB's to help the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians, 6-5.

  • The New York Yankees beat the Kansas City A's, 13-7 thanks to the help of their first baseman, Joe Pepitone. Pepitone hit 2 home runs in one inning.
  • The National Basketball Association agreed to transfer the Philadelphia Warriors to San Francisco, CA. The team became the San Francisco Warriors (and later the Golden State Warriors).

  • The San Francisco Giants fire their manager, Clyde King and replace him with Charlie Fox. The Giants were 19-23 at the time and finished the season at 86-76.

  • German side Borussia Mönchengladbach defeat Yugoslav side Red Star Belgrade 1-0 and win the UEFA Cup 2-1 on aggregate.

  • With a 3-2 win over the California Angels, the Detroit Tigers won their 16th consecutive road game, tying an American League record.

  • In just his 15th start as a major leaguer, Tommy Greene throws a no-hitter, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Montreal Expos, 2-0.
  • The San Diego Sockers won their fourth consecutive Major Soccer League championship.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Minnesota North Stars, 6-4, in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals.

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Boston Bruins in four games to win the Wales Conference Championship for the second consecutive season.

  • Brady Anderson of the Baltimore Orioles ties an American League record by getting hit by a pitch twice in the same inning. He would score both times as the Orioles beat the Texas Rangers, 16-5.

  • Rickey Henderson draws his 2000th career walk becoming just the third player in baseball history to accomplish the feat, joining Ted Williams and Babe Ruth.

  • Shawn Green becomes the 14th player in major league history to hit 4 home runs in a game. He had 19 total bases as his Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 16-3.

  • Kaz Matsui hit his fifth leadoff homer of the season. He became the first player to have his first five major league home runs come in the first inning and he was the first New York Mets player to lead off a game with a home run in consecutive games.

  • Czech Republic midfielder Tomas Rosicky joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund.

  • Carl Pavano made his MLB debut for the Montreal Expos. He went 7 strong innings, allowing just 1 earned run as the Expose beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2. Pavano did not factor in the decision.
