  • After 9 years of sharing the Polo Grounds with the New York Giants, the New York Yankees began construction of their own stadium in the Bronx.

  • Ted Lyons, pitching for the Chicago White Sox, beat the Washington Senators for his 200th career victory.

  • Mickey Mantle hit a monster home run to right field, just barely missing becoming the first player to hit a baseball clear out of Yankee Stadium

  • Willie Stargell had 5 hits (3 homers, a double, and a single) as his Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs, 13-6. He had 7 RBI.

  • Felipe Alou takes the reigns of the Montreal Expos after Tom Runnells was fired. The Expos were 17-20 at the time and finished the year at 85-77, good enough for second place in the NL East

  • The New Jersey Devils defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-2, in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals and eventually defeated Pittsburgh in five games.

  • After just 8 days with the team, the Florida Marlins trade Mike Piazza to the New York Mets in exchange for Preston Wilson, Ed Yarnall, and Geoff Goetz

  • Roger Clemens went 6 innings to give the New York Yankees the 10-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. The win was the 19th straight win for Clemens.

  • The Milwaukee Brewers scored 7 times in the 9th to tie the game at 9 against the Houston Astros. A solo shot by Jose Hernandez in the 10th gave the Brewers their biggest comeback win in franchise history.

  • Barry Bonds hit his 583rd career home run, moving him into a tie with Mark McGwire for fifth on the all-time list.
  • The Oakland A's traded Jeremy Giambi to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for John Mabry.

  • Annika Sorentam shot a 1 over par at the Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the first woman to play on the PGA Tour in 58 years.
  • High schooler, LeBron James signed a $90 million deal with Nike to endorse their sneakers.
  • Steve McNair, quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, was arrested and charged with drunken driving and possession of a handgun.
  • Arturo Moreno bought the Los Angeles Angels for $184 million from Walt Disney

  • Jake Peavy strikes out 16 batters in just 7 innings of work, but is outdueled by John Smoltz as the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres, 3-1.
  • Justin Verlander tosses the first shutout of his career as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals, 8-0. It was the 11th start of Verlander's young career.

  • Mark Prior made his MLB debut for the Chicago Cubs. He beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-4, and became just the 14th Cubs pitcher since 1920 to win his debut.
