  • Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) forms in Paris, France.

  • After a game in which the New York Giants lose to the Chicago Cubs, 3-0, dropping the Giants out of first place, the crowd at the Polo Grounds charge the field. The players have to form a ring around the umpries, Hank O'Day and Bob Emslie and the guards have to fire shots into the air to try to keep the crowd from tearing the umps apart.

  • The New York Giants sent Jim Thorpe to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for $1500.

  • The Detroit Tigers and Washington Senators combine to turn 9 double players in a 9 inning game, tieing a major league record. The Senators won the game, 6-2.
  • Mickey Cochrane, a rookie at the time, hit 3 HR in one game for the Philadelphia Athletics. That day made up half of his home run production for the year as he finished with 6.

  • Earl Sheely of the Chicago White Sox doubled in his sixth consecutive at bat.

  • Max Bishop, the second baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics, drew 8 walks in a doubleheader.
  • Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees homered in 3 consecutive at bats as the Yankees lost both games of a doubleheader to the Philadelphia Phillies. In his last at bat of the day he would attempt to bat right handed against Jack Quinn. After two quick strikes he went back to the left side of the plate, but he struck out.

  • The Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators complete a 9 inning game in 89 minutes, the fastest game in American League history

  • The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Cincinati Reds by a score of 19-1 after scoring 15 in the first inning.

  • Cleveland Indians' sportswriter, Doris O'Donnell isn't allowed into the press box at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox had a rule prohibitting females from the booth.

  • Tom Seaver shuts out the Atlanta Braves, 5-0 and the New York Mets improve to 18-18. It was the latest in a season where they would be at .500.

  • German side Borussia Monchengladbach defeat Dutch side FC Twente 5-1 in the second leg of the UEFA Cup final. The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw.

  • The Montreal Canadiens win the Stanley Cup by defeating the New York Rangers four games to one.

  • The bus of the California Angels goes out of control on the New Jersey Turnpike and crashes, injuring 11 including manager, Buck Rodgers

  • The Colorado Rockies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates as Larry Walker set a team record with 13 total bases. He homered twice, tripled, and doubled to knock in 6.
  • Ken Griffey Jr. hit a home run off of Vaughn Eshelman as the Seattle Mariners outslugged the Boston Red Sox, 13-7. It was Griffey's 200th homerun, making him the 8th youngest player in major league history to hit that many. He was 26.

  • Roger Clemens notched his 200th career win as he went 8 innings, allowing just 1 run and struck out 12. His Boston Red Soxbeat the New York Yankees, 4-1.

  • Six grand slams were hit to set a major league baseball record. Garrett Anderson, J.T. Snow, Brian Hunter, Jason Giambi, Adrian Beltre, and Shawn Green all went deep with the bases loaded.

  • Alex Rodriguez returns to Texas for the first time after the Texas Rangers traded him to the New York Yankees and he hits a home run in his first at bat to the displeasure of the fans.

  • The Texas Rangers set two team records by homering 8 times in a game with 4 of them coming in one inning as they beat the Houston Astros, 18-3. Dave Dellucci homered twice and six other players had 1 a piece. Ezequiel Astacio allowed 4 of them as he was tagged for 9 runs in just 1.2 IP.
  • Dae-Sung Koo, a Korean, lefty, rookie reliever for the New York Mets, gets up to bat against Randy Johnson and obviously is not comfortable facing the Big Unit. Mike Piazza tells teammate David Wright that if Koo gets a hit he will donate $1 million to charity. Against all odds, Koo smashed a pitch to the center field wall for a double. Piazza plans on making his contributions over the next 20 years.
  • Arsenal win their tenth FA Cup, beating Manchester United 5-4 on penalties in the Final. The final was played at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

  • Matt Cain tosses his first career shutout as he allows just one hit, a double to Jay Payton. Cain's San Francisco Giants beat the Oakland A's, 6-0
  • With a 10-3 victory, the St. Louis Cardinals complete a sweep of the Kansas City Royals. Albert Pujols homered in all three games giving him 22 homers just 44 games into the season.
